Kosmogabri, you are completely right; this film totally lacks the "freaxploitation" factor. However, I still believe that if it weren't for Lynch's film, this one would have never been made.

Of course I take it easy, but you’re quite a character: what’s this story about me not knowing Bogdanovich? I don’t recall boasting about having perfect knowledge of his cinema, nor have I expressed any judgments on his previous works. Calling me a kid while assuming I don’t know the director seems rather presumptuous on your part, and in any case, instead of listing the titles of his best films, why don’t you at least provide an argument in defense of this film?

What do Freaks and The Monkey Woman have to do with it? I brought up the comparison with Elephant Man because it is objectively similar, not to mention practically contemporary. If we're bringing up Browning and Ferreri, we might as well compare it to Notre Dame de Paris with Lon Chaney or Beauty and the Beast. Anyway, I didn't intend to spark a controversy; I just want to say, with all due respect to supersoul and all the arrogant know-it-alls like him, that the film is clearly "inspired" by Lynch's masterpiece and I did not like it at all.

Thank you for the super simple lesson, I'm glad you're here to explain it to me, Bogdanovich.

actually, this came out in 1985, just 5 years after Lynch's film. An inevitable comparison, and between the two, excuse me, but there’s really an abyss... I don’t believe that the perfection of Lynch’s direction, a great Anthony Hopkins, and the freakshow of dark Victorian London holds a candle to Cher and her band of American motorcyclists. The truly grotesque thing is that Elephant Man, despite 8 nominations, won nothing, while this one won an Oscar for Best Makeup.

I may be a cynical bastard, but I simply couldn't take seriously the whole story of the little elephant man living with Cher and a gang of bikers... regardless of the truth behind it, to me it's just a pathetic little film riding the coattails of the success of Elephant Man, a commercial exploitation trying in every way to move the audience, absolutely incomparable to Lynch's masterpiece (now that’s a truly heart-wrenching film).

Well, oh my God Poletti, if you get emotional in front of these things, you're in pretty bad shape too... when you saw Elephant Man, what did you do then, did you try to commit suicide?
Ramones Leave Home

Sure, the Ramones were great, but after Road To Ruin they could have just broken up.

so bad it's (unintentionally) hilarious, I still fondly remember the belly laughs I had when I saw it years ago.
