Shion Sono Suicide Club
Voto:
One of the most extreme films ever made? Absolutely not (even though at least a couple of scenes are truly disturbing). Nice, but I definitely prefer Battle Royale.
Christopher Nolan The Dark Knight
Voto:
A deadly bore. Ledger's performance is excellent, portraying a Joker that is much more psychopathic than Nicholson's (the voice actor is the same), but the film is really too long and repetitive. From how everyone talks about it, I expected a near masterpiece, but... disappointment.
M. Night Shyamalan E venne il giorno
Voto:
Well, all in all I expected worse; of course the acting of the two protagonists is nothing short of atrocious, the dialogues are often ridiculous ("One minute! Give me a minute! Why is no one giving me a minute?") and the pointless issue of the "couple's crisis" unnecessarily weighs down the narrative. However, the first 15 minutes are excellent, here and there there are well-executed moments of tension and I didn't mind the ending.
Satoshi Kon Paprika
Voto:
You're right, ajeje, it's actually a bit cumbersome, at times even confusing, but it has a fascinating plot and superb technical execution. I haven't seen Millennium Actress, but I liked both Perfect Blue and Tokyo Godfathers more than Paprika... all while reiterating that (I emphasize) Paranoia Agent remains unbeatable.

Very beautiful, it's just a shame about the (terrible) music which, in my opinion, is completely out of context: in fact, the soundtrack is full of extremely annoying techno-jap-pop motifs that have nothing to do with it and ruin the atmosphere. Other than that, I really appreciate Satoshi Kon and as far as I'm concerned, I consider the miniseries "Paranoia Agent" his greatest masterpiece.
Michael Haneke Funny Games U.S.
Voto:
@Velluto: yes, Haneke's reflection on violence may not be entirely new, but in the end, this is a secondary detail. What makes the film completely different from other more or less similar movies (like Straw Dogs and Desperate Hours) is the very way in which this reflection is approached: almost real-time narration, no soundtrack, minimal editing, etc. What Enea perceived as a "nerve-wracking stasis" is, in my opinion, one of the most sadistic directorial choices I have ever seen, which alone is enough to make this film something radically different.
Robert Altman Nashville
Voto:
I also saw the version that Ghezzi sent to Fuori Orario some time ago, but Nashville definitely exists in Italian.
The Wizards From Kansas The Wizards From Kansas
Voto:
Regarding Lovecraft: I watched the film you mentioned to me some time ago, and I must say I really enjoyed it. Besides being extremely faithful to the story, it truly feels like a German expressionist film in the style of Murnau/Lang (and that's saying something!).
Michael Haneke Funny Games U.S.
Voto:
@Bartle: so on Il Tempo we think the same way... nice, but (unfortunately) not fully successful. As for his Masterpiece, I say Funny Games. @Fritz: the song at the beginning, if it's the same as the original, is Hellraiser by Naked City.

You're right, we'll talk about it again once I've seen it (but I already said I still had to watch it!). It's probably the Hanekian style that doesn't sit well with you: I have several friends who have a real hatred for him... but that's how it is, you either love him or hate him. However, at this point you could also take a look at the original, maybe you'll change your mind (or maybe not). If you're up for it, try to watch Benny's Video (also centered on the theme of "gratuitous" violence) or Niente Da Nascondere (for me a masterpiece).
