Bruce Springsteen High Hopes

A collage of scraps, was it really necessary? Is it possible that when one becomes "grown-up" they can't make an album with a bit of effort? Springsteen still has so much to say, still songs and places to share, and music, passionate and vital like only he can deliver. But this feels to me like commercial operations and nothing more.

It's a shame it was overlooked for the Oscars; surely both would have deserved it.

I have no regrets about giving it a "five"... I'd give it just for Harvey Keitel and the magnificent character he portrays. I understand that Ribaldo is not detailed, but this is precisely a peculiarity that makes it a film with more European than American lighting and scenery.

There would be so much to say about this album. I listened to it as soon as it came out, but now I've let it sit to breathe, the impact was too strong; but above all, after his death, you feel even more the desperate strength of a man aware of his imminent end. But he wasn't an ordinary man; he was Bowie, the one who made his life a continuous challenge without succumbing to any label or easy clichés. And in this, Bowie always stood out, riding the 70s and revolutionizing pop with bold experiments that were never self-serving. In the following decades, he alternated missteps with masterful strikes; the horse he rode in the 70s had bolted, and he was no longer completely in control of the game. With "The Next Day" and "Blackstar," he wiped the slate clean, starting from an introspection that bore new yet occasionally bitter and bloody fruits. Your research is beautiful; I also believe that the whole story of the album released two days after his birthday and his subsequent death is esoteric… everything was studied, everything calculated in ways we will never know.

I agree, I found them in great shape too, and they resumed the discussion, as you rightly point out, right from "Dog man star."

As I already wrote, I've only listened to the singles like most ordinary and poor mortals, and they really sound amazing. Your review is great, clear, and you hit all the right points. After all, it was already evident from his singles that this wasn't an ordinary album. Bowie seems to capitalize on years of experimentation that have sometimes led him to embarrassing episodes (aka the duet with Pet Shop Boys) to bring out the best in himself. The fact that he gave up exhausting tours and the overused mechanism of appearing just to stay in the music business loop has allowed him to develop his experimentation freely, which is never an end in itself.

I agree with you, Mark Rylance as Rudolf Abel is the most convincing protagonist unlike Tom Hanks.

It may be, but 1) have you seen the movie? 2) for what reason then?

Beautiful review, Soulman. Yesterday I discovered this wonderful singer thanks to the often maligned Spotify, which may be sacrificial fodder for multinational record companies, but sometimes treasures like this emerge. Among his albums, I really enjoyed, in addition to the self-titled one, also Extension of a Man, which in my opinion is jazzier than the previous ones.

Practically impossible to find book. I worked at a distributor for Tsunami (one of the best music publishing companies in Italy, in my opinion), I recommend ordering this title from their website www.tsunamiedizioni.com
