All mysteries solve themselves if in the end it’s all a dream; explanations only matter for the real world... It’s clear that Aomame is drawn by Tengo from the real world she lives in to within his novel. The problem is that inside his novel-dream, he ends up trapped as well. The book is all a dream in Tengo's mind. And dreams are mysterious by definition. Anyway, 1Q84 has a nice underlying idea but it’s not very original. The existential musings of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle are much better... etc. etc.

One thing I haven't mentioned so far is that this song has evoked images of water, rain, and sea in me from the very first time I heard it. All of this before I saw the video for the first time. I find it all truly magical, and also a bit unsettling; probably the sounds of this song are really made of water. Magical synesthesia. It’s likely that it was that song that brought down the water from the sky. Perhaps the whole world is in my head and there’s nothing else outside...

I don't know why they annoy so many people; I really don't understand the accusation of being banal, obvious, and shamelessly derivative. I went to listen to some of the bands (e.g. Sunny Day Real Estate) they're compared to, but honestly, I don't find all these similarities. I mean, sure, there are a couple of echoes in two or three phrases in each song. If the problem is being derivative, then 90% of great music from recent years (e.g. my beloved Flaming Lips) would fall into that category. But in literature, it would mean tossing aside people like Borges, whom I consider one of the greatest, if not the greatest, writer of the twentieth century.

For me, Lose is a stunning album, one of the few in the last thirty years that made me want to pick up a guitar or put my hands on a keyboard to find the chords of a song...
