I don't understand how one can say that a technical artist is driven to create solely by the desire to overdo it.

"Technique represents merely a desire to reach a limit... trying to overdo it by pushing one’s instrument to the edge... but this leads to coldness, implies a minimal interest in music as an art form, and results in achieving a technical limit rather than an artistic one." This is a novelty! I do not understand how one can limit oneself to judging an artist based solely on purely technical considerations.

Well... the guitarists you mentioned are undoubtedly great (I'm mainly referring to Metheny because I only know the others by name and I've never listened to them) but they play a completely different genre... Vai is a guitarist much more into hard rock... and he works as a "experimenter" (I don't really like this word...) in that field...

shark, but what are these people graduated in? in snack sciences? I have friends who attend some cpm others percent music (the best academies in Italy for modern guitar) and I assure you that there guitarists like you are even revered, even by the masters...

the usual pretentious review that can only come from someone who judges a musician by the number of notes they play (despite all the nice words...). Do they play many? automatically they are garbage. oh well. But a question arises spontaneously. why don't you teach Vai how to do "arrangiamenti armonici"?
