Icons unconsciously push you to identify God or the saint with the statue! In fact, often when asking a practicing Catholic, "What do you think if I say GOD?" you might hear the response "an old man with a beard"! TERRIFYING!

But how do they bring you closer to spirituality? The statues don’t tell you who the saint was; they only show you his physical appearance! But who cares about that? You can think and reflect perfectly well on Saint Augustine without ever having seen him, but by reading his WORDS, knowing his THOUGHT. Not by seeing his statue! That’s just a piece of marble.

Well, we are material beings... wait:-) I don't want to get into this discussion now! And anyway, in Christianity, we are indeed body but also soul (spirit), so... what irritates me is seeing people waving their arms in front of statues of God or saints! There is nothing more un-Christian than this!

I wonder what Saint Thomas (the doctor of the Church) would say if he heard you... at the very least, he’d excommunicate you! Anyway, I don’t blame the Church too much for meddling in political matters (Christianity is, after all, a totalitarian religion...) as much as I do for the way it practices its doctrine! For example: if it were up to me, I would remove all statues and icons from churches and cathedrals. I think they distract from God. BUT PEOPLE NEED THE LITTLE PICTURE!
