Surely Anderson deserves credit for keeping the group going and giving it a fresh coat of paint, considering that no one would have bet a pound after Butler's departure (and the English press at the time ruthlessly attacked Suede, focused on recounting the decidedly less noble exploits of Blur and Oasis). He managed to produce three albums that, for me, are anonymous, good for fans of that kind of music, but not for those like me who usually listen to other things. I had been captivated by the audacious genius of the early albums, and especially by Butler's guitar style. But certainly a "coming up" is worth more than many albums by Blur or Verve.
