Indie-rock is a term to be taken with a grain of salt. It encompasses everything that has emerged from the independent underground, derived from punk but without any metal influences (for example, grunge is not indie-rock; even though Nirvana had the right attitude, they were not). In this genre, Pavement may not have been the best, but they certainly embodied that attitude spoken of by the know-it-all, which is undoubtedly an essential component.
