Manfred Eicher understood, long before it became obvious, that a fertile ground for jazz development and experimentation was Scandinavia. The sounds of artists like Jan Garbarek, Marilyn Mazur, Bobo Stenson, Palle Danielsson, Jon Christensen, Jon Balke, Tord Gustavsen, Arild Andersen, Nils Petter Molvaer, Sidsel Endresen, Eivind Aarset, Esbjorn Svensson, so closely aligned with the ECM aesthetic ideal—glacial and crystalline—have opened a new, entirely European vein for improvisational music. Here, with Lisa Ekdahl, we find ourselves in a more accessible and blended territory, as the reviewer rightly points out, but undoubtedly the notice is filled with interest.
