Extra-ordinary noise-rock demolition. Faiv magna cum laude.
César Franck - (Martha Argerich, Itzhak Perlman) Sonata per Violino e Piano in La maggiore, M 8
Voto:
As always, your choice is exquisitely refined, Lello; it is truly an emotional sonata to be savored in intimacy, allowing oneself to be carried away by the imposing emotional flow it can unleash. The version you propose is of absolute reference; I recently stumbled upon a Denon edition featuring Chee Yun on violin and Akira Eguchi on piano, two really promising young Japanese artists. In this CD, the op. 9 sonata by Szymanowski is paired, which is also stunning, played in registers similar to the Franckian model. Loggionesque regards.
Diana Krall The Look Of Love
Voto:
I completely agree with your analysis, Grass, impeccable. I first encountered Diana with her early albums, more pure, without orchestras and other frills, when she was simply supported by drums, double bass, and guitar (Steppin' Out, Only Trust Your Eyes): well, it was pleasurable, but even then it gave me a sense of incompleteness, of untapped potential. These aspects were amplified with albums like The Look Of Love, where the polished component ends up taking over, and you sense how spontaneity and genuineness have been replaced by calculated planning (you effectively highlight this when you talk about the "scientific" alternation of the songs in the setlist). Anyway, the final blow was seeing her live in Taormina, at the Ancient Theater: a night with high expectations, and yet the blonde Canadian delivered about an hour of a well-behaved concert but nothing more, two stretched-out encores and a lot of goodbyes. Glacially professional, she left everyone with a bitter taste. Since then, everything related to her for me doesn’t go beyond a 3 (physical appearance excluded!).
Charles Mingus The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady
Voto:
Mingus has the rare ability to inoculate jazz under your skin, to make you breathe it in. I slightly prefer this to Pithecanthropus, Ah Uhm, and Oh Yeah.

Excellent review for yet another gem that is missing from my discography.
