@GBrunoro: I don’t know whether Giordano Bruno was an atheist or not; I haven’t read his works thoroughly. Rest assured that if he had been, it wouldn’t have changed much (it certainly wouldn’t have been a motive for absolving him). What makes me a bit angry is that professing atheism in civil society is seen as a fundamentalist and offensive attitude towards others. There are Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, subscribers of Scientology; they all have their dignity, but if you’re an atheist, you’re merely considered a narrow-minded materialist without spirit... Even at the level of 8 per mille, you cannot choose to allocate it to any association for the promotion of atheism and agnosticism.

Honestly, the Gospel I found to be the most beautiful and realistic among all I have read is the one according to Christ (in Saramago's Vulgate). Kant, in my opinion, you make an imprecision when you say (in post 35) that Galileo was religious. He was, because at that time anyone who declared themselves an atheist would be roasted on a fire like a nice chestnut (just as happened to the good soul of Giordano Bruno...). Deep down, who knows, I honestly lean towards no (Zichichi leans towards yes; he even wrote a book on it full of nonsense). Honestly, I find the thought that God does not exist to be comforting. Looking at the world, it seems to me so full of wrong things that any possible Ordering Intelligence, in my opinion, would necessarily have to be evil.

continuing with the tasty controversies, I don't know if you followed the one between Hon. Gabriella Carlucci, Prof. Maiani, and Nobel Prize winner Sheldon Lee Glashow. It’s truly surreal. If you missed it, you can find it here: puglialive.net puglialive.net

Well, with all due respect, it doesn't seem to me that science has the potential to become a good religion. It's too complicated, it doesn't resonate with the masses, it instills a lot of doubt (in short, it's not dangerous). Religions, on the other hand, can be...

Oh my God, Odifreddi doesn't excite me that much anymore, even though the controversy stirred up over that jerk Zichichi remains quite juicy. Let's say he takes himself a bit too seriously; come on, Theology is a branch of fantastic literature and should be treated as such. For those who haven’t read it, I recommend the masterful investigation by Curzio Maltese: "La questua. Quanto costa la Chiesa agli italiani." It delves into the strictly economic side of the issue, which, deep down, turns out to be more interesting...

Good job Terry, you really piqued my interest, just the book I need these days. Since I'm abroad, I guess I'll read it in English. They've completely twisted the title into a tacky "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," complete with a tattoo on the cover: link rotto

Every story, no matter how short, seems to encompass a universe, better than a world map at a 1:1 scale. While I'm at it, I'll include a few quotes (“La vida misma es una cita” for our Borges):
"The idea of a God, an all-knowing, all-powerful being who also loves us, is one of the boldest creations of fantastical literature."
"Falling in love is giving life to a religion whose god is fallible."
"The sea is an ancient language that I cannot decipher."

It feels like I'm reading "The Secret Diary of Sally Mara" by Queneau... well done Martina, keep it up, you're wonderful.
