I haven't seen the film, but your review reminded me of a 1976 movie (San Babila, ore 20: un delitto inutile), which tells the absurd tales of a group of right-wing extremists: I found the same crass ignorance and the same culture made up of slogans and superhumanism, as well as the same existential void you describe. These are people who may be socially marginalized or come from frightening family backgrounds (absent, despotic, overly protective, or overly permissive parents): of course, this doesn't justify them (just as I don't justify the opposite extremism, which, aside from the superhumanism, often resembles that of the right): no matter how compressed it may be, free will exists.

I give credit to the reception mainly for its courage. The execution seems dignified to me: it's practically impossible to write anything that hasn't already been written on the subject, but at least someone who knows nothing about Dante can get an idea of what they are about to read.

The story is really flavorful; the album has 6-7 gems (including "Addolorato," "Amico Uligano," and "Faro," with its chorus "... but fuck off!"); the rest showcases their skillful eclecticism but I enjoy it less.
