Dream Theater Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory

of course not! just like the Velvet Underground wouldn’t have been able to cover King Crimson... just like Suicide wouldn’t have been able to cover Faust... or like Massive Attack aren’t able to cover Porcupine Tree :-D ..so what? what are these arguments? ..They make no sense come on

Debeer, is anyone home? What have you read? :-D ..I said that the grandiloquent Keenan from the Grandiloquent Tool did a cover of the "little band" Cure with A Perfect Circle; specifically, he covered "Lovesong."

Great Orion, GREAT! You’re back! :-D legendary... Orion, it’s better that you and I get this over with.. it would be the third time we find ourselves discussing the exact same thing. I’ll limit myself (for how long? The third, the fourth time?) to reiterating one thing: how would I have been able to intuit an identical passage a few seconds long (because they are identical, you admitted it too, Orion! Then you said it was such a trivial and overused passage that it made no sense as plagiarism) if the whole solo hadn't been heavily similar in style and atmosphere from "shine on.." to "spirit"?? hmm... who knows.. but anyway, shall we talk about regression? Does it have anything to do with Outside the Wall or not? And those female choirs in "spirit..".. are they or are they not identical in usage and style to those in "dark side"? hmm... who knows :-D ..anyway, if Lux takes the time, he’ll post another ten unacknowledged plagiarisms that he’s discovered too. As already mentioned, there’s even a forum dedicated to it. So we can definitively put this discussion to rest. ..Enough of this nonsense though, as I said first, it’s a rather superficial argument; we had definitely moved beyond that (but squonk doesn’t seem to want to change the subject).. how are you, Orion? It’s been a while since we heard from each other!

Ah, by the way: the theatrically dramatic Maynard Keenan of Tool includes a cover of the “four chords band” Cure in the side project A Perfect Circle ;-D

oh oh oh.. good heavens squonk, and yet I mentioned masterpieces that are my references. And what do you come up with? "But do you only like the 4 little chords of the Cure and the Ramones"?
:-D ..we're not on the same page: have you ever listened to Slint? Television? Pere Ubu? I can't help but wonder, a thought I never would have had before, if you haven't even heard them once, otherwise you wouldn't have thought of such an unfortunate comment. Aside from that: I said that Tool PERSONALLY bore me; they are certainly not an irrelevant band, but I don't find them that exceptional either, very theatrical indeed, rather pompous; interesting but far from essential; they haven't really invented much, certainly their impact is more in the execution factors rather than expressive ones; I don't know what you see as post-rock in Tool, by the way. P.S. I've had my fair share of metal, just because I don't like the bands you like doesn't mean I don't like metal at all :-D

Hi Lux. I don't know, I mean... after a while, Tool bores me; however, there were a few nice tracks... overall, they don't really drive me crazy... a little bit theatrical.

"aimed at contradicting certain artistic forms"? Of course. Why not? But I have my references. And these remain something that cannot be defined as "relative," simply because they exist. And so, since for me they remain masterpieces like "velvet underground&nico," as well as "the piper at the gates of dawn," as well as "suicide," as well as "marquee moon," as well as "modern dance," as well as "surfer rosa" or "doolittle," as well as "daydream nation," as well as "spiderland," as well as "loveless," I certainly cannot admit, from my point of view, that something like Dream Theater can be considered great art. Because it would be an "injustice" to all the records mentioned above, which I consider masterpieces, and which represent, for me, an artistic, creative effort enormously greater than anything the Dt could ever even dream of doing. Hence my opinion. There is no conjecture, even if it suits you to believe so; it’s simple logic. Then obviously, everyone has their own references...

even more, I hadn't noticed the most arrogant point: the Pixies, punk and post-hardcore "don't create melodies" ..incredible! ..but then, who said that the Pixies and punk have no references? do you see? It seems to me that my viewpoint, when not distorted, hasn't even been considered. Everyone has references because everyone is embedded in a certain culture. But there's a difference between REinterpreting them, shaping them, and subserving them to an expression. There's also a difference between taking them for the very purpose of the expression itself. What I criticize is citationism, it's the pseudo-conservative revivalism that diminishes the DT. It's not about having references. That's what you said, not me.

Moreover, you're right, we're on a totally different level: your childish a priori reasoning when it comes to the Pixies really made me smile. In fact, if I harshly criticize the DT, it’s because I strongly believe that everything can be connected to everything, that each thing should be viewed in a context and historical moment. You don’t think so; for you, the Pixies don’t even exist. Therefore, the fact that you don't say you think they suck is, if anything, proof that your perspective is much narrower—and certainly not more open—than mine. Because at least I acknowledge the existence of the DT, and precisely because they exist, I reiterate from my point of view what seem to me to be enormous flaws. You don’t; for you, anything that doesn’t adhere to your standards is simply not considered. I’m not surprised that despite the thousands of words posted, you, like a parrot, persistently continue to repeat the same concepts. The style is that: concepts that don’t align with your opinion clearly don’t exist. And thank goodness it’s supposedly a matter of “style” and “education”; after all, thank goodness I’m the narcissist. But then again, you’re happy: it’s strange how certain people get offended simply for not being able to impose a point of view; because, from your last post, that seems to be your only goal. Bye.
