Yo La Tengo I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One

Apart from the fact that a sample lasts a few seconds and can't convey any real idea, apart from how one can even say "zero originality" after listening to just a few seconds, apart from the fact that a voice that one doesn't like is purely a matter of personal taste... this is an album from ten years ago, so saying that these are "heard and re-heard" things doesn't make sense.

There is probably a fundamental misunderstanding. Orion, Stoney made such claims without substantiating them because he had already made his opinion clear in another review. So he probably didn’t rewrite what he had already expressed because he thought he would be referring to the same people who had read him there. Of course, you couldn’t know that he had already written quite a bit elsewhere.. your reaction is more than understandable. But so is Stoney’s argument (if you know the premises). If you're interested, his first posts are in the review of lux a systematic chaos. Hi!

Hello! First of all, thank you for your kind words :-) .. I totally agree with you about My cat ius an alien.. but I lost track of it halfway (and the half I saw, I repeat, left me neither cold nor warm), so I completely omitted it from the review for the two reasons mentioned above.. many might criticize that this way the "review" of the concert suffers, but I find it utterly pointless to write reviews.. and I always focus on a holistic view that (tries to) interpret rather than describe. As for the SY, look, you are absolutely right. If we want to be honest, the second half was pretty much promotional. But if I had to say that I hated it, I honestly wouldn't say that. Rather than concentrating on the reasons for playing only pieces from Rather Ripped after the entire Daydream Nation, I naturally focused on the differences between the two parts, or at least what I perceived as different and why.. in any case, I find the SY so rich in style, from every point of view, that I can't really say that one part was better than the other. Of course, one album is definitely better than the other, but in the concert, both made sense to me.

I almost completely agree with Azzo; I won't get into the specifics because I've somewhat lost track, but I evaluate the method: Azzo has argued well and convincingly. Of course, one can disagree, but saying "he's talking nonsense" is truly a ridiculous childishness.

In fact, I agree with Lux. I think the challenge in a chart-topping track is finding an outlet that is not only melodic but also in tune with a trend/fashion (and indeed the more refined and sharp producers in this regard, like the Dust Brothers, even intuit how to create trends, not just follow them). Personally, I adore the Dust Brothers; I would much rather choose them than a Butch Vig to produce me. They have fantastic arranging ideas (in their deliberately silly way) :-D

Here we are! I was waiting for your input here ;-D ..hi Stoney, you’re great.. I really liked your comment on Kandinsky. It perfectly summarizes years and years of posts I've expressed.

The fact that Nirvana recalls countless influences from the most diverse backgrounds is yet another example that they are products of a precise attitude, specifically that of indie. Because all American indie bands share this in common: being a multicolored crossover where anything is possible; although born of punk in its amateurish, independent, often rough (in a good way) essence, absolutely open and absolutely tied to the simple and direct song format. What the Seattle branch therefore represents is the accentuation of certain characteristics and influences.

Of course neither Nirvana nor Mudhoney have a metal attitude. It's obvious. Mudhoney, in particular, references garage music much more than punk. Yet, beneath it all, neither of them, nor Nirvana, transcend certain influences. Often, Nirvana's sound is much more magmatic and dark compared to punk, not just in their ballads (which already indicate different lineages from punk) but also in tracks like "Heart Shaped Box" or "Territorial Pissings." Furthermore, it’s true that Kurt Cobain always described Nirvana and Seattle as "punk," but because the approach is that of nonchalance (towards the mainstream) and is entirely fiercely independent. Yet (by the way, in the same interview) he defines his main inspirations as the Melvins, the group that draws most clearly from Black Sabbath. Also, it’s precisely as an approach and spirit that, for the reasons mentioned above, the definition of grunge wouldn’t make sense: as an approach and spirit, it is in fact entirely rooted in the logic and development of American indie in the '80s. Rather, it is from a strictly musical point of view that it partially diverges, and I repeat, in my opinion, this is a purely territorial issue. Simply put, (almost) all the Grunge bands, or at least all the forerunners/founders, came from the same area, and therefore had peculiar characteristics.
