Sure! But his rhythms remain essential!! :) As a solo singer, he's one of the worst disasters I've seen in rock in recent years!! :((

Since you have seen and heard "I Dance Alone," you will know a certain track called "Glory Box" and a certain group named "Portishead." How can you give five stars to Hooverphonic after listening to Portishead?

A bit meager, right? If it were just pop rock and acoustic ballads, what would they have that’s interesting? Maybe a more in-depth description...

Yes, but it's precisely when it blends that I find it far from essential, a bit overrated in fact... and then Collins had a vastly more refined sound... I don't find much care in the sounds with Copeland, who, as you said, was a "passionate" type, very instinctive, not very precise... anyway, don't worry too much about it... Maybe I'm saying this because of the underlying dislike I've always felt towards the Police!! :)

No, don't worry, I'm not a hardcore Collins fan! :) I'm also referring exclusively to his work with Genesis in the early period, up to and including Foxtrot, just to be clear. Until that album, I honestly find it monstrous, and regardless of what the metalhead above says, Portnoy is literally all in there! Anyway, I don't find Copeland to be that eclectic.. On the contrary, he seems to me like someone who had a well-defined style and carried it through his whole career without major evolutions.

Thank you, aNtaNi. In fact, I wasn't just talking from a strictly technical perspective, for the simple reason that when it comes to music, ONE CANNOT talk solely about technique; rather, technique should take a back seat to concepts like creativity, originality, personality, expressiveness, and the like. Taking these factors into account, there is no comparison between Phil Collins and Mike Portnoy: the former is immensely greater than anything Mike Portnoy could ever dream of being; much more refined, much more varied, much more tastefully gifted and less intrusive—in short, superior practically in every way. And I couldn’t care less if Portnoy has a drum kit with rails, three hundred toms, two thousand cymbals, etc., and plays them all: these are sterile fireworks that drummers (not even among my favorites) like Ginger Baker and John Bonham were doing in a much more constructive way about 35 years ago. I've certainly listened to Liquid Tension Experiment, and I have never found a worse performance from Tony Levin, who makes fewer flourishes in King Crimson but performs much better. The rest of the album is utterly pointless. Vane, I disagree; in my opinion, Collins (who is not my favorite either) is better than Copeland.
