Dream Theater Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory

Furthermore, I absolutely wanted everything I wrote. I'm sorry, but my perception has been quite different: that is to say, after continuing the discussion in a certainly heated but still fundamentally respectful manner, you completely exploded yesterday: you say there’s a reason for this, but I don’t see it: because aside from the criticisms, and apart from a few sentences, I confirm that you seemed to be playing the part of the Inquisition. And to express an opinion, you didn’t understand that I simply meant a point of view. This MINIMALLY transpired from your words: NOT the denial of what I said (a denial that, in fact, you tried at all costs to elicit), NOT the opposite (which would obviously make no sense) but YOUR point of view. You never did that; it was a destructive point of view, not a constructive one. You didn’t set up a discussion, but rather a kind of third degree, a trial. A discussion implies an exchange that has never taken place. I may be stubborn about my opinions, but up until now, you haven’t had one.

Am I supposed to be the same as the dull crowd of fans? I see nothing in common... One, because my positions, as I have already explained, seem to me anything but extreme. Two, because at least I have a definable point of view. Three, because I don’t see where my dullness lies. In my convictions? Ideas can be changed, but that’s not always a good thing. I have a very clear point of view because it’s based on hundreds of listens, on hundreds of records that I consider masterpieces, but also because they have taught me to appreciate them as such through dozens of books read, hundreds of magazines and articles browsed and compared. I have formed an idea. This is why I come here to write what I write. So you dare to judge a point of view as dull that is not born out of ignorance, that is not illogical (I think that even if you consider it "confused," there are no grounds to label it as senseless), and that is not devoid of historical and musical support. Thus, I don’t understand what leads you to define it as "dull,ā€ which completely falls apart.

Then you say: mine is an extreme position: debatable, very much debatable; the way I present it is definitely extreme, it can easily be considered presumptuous or arrogant, I can even acknowledge that; but the idea that the contents are extreme I find absolutely false. My discourse starts from aesthetic considerations, obviously not just my own, obviously shaped by listens and readings; it is for example a perspective similar, with the necessary proportions, to the idea of art and Rock that a critic like Lester Bangs had. All of this is obviously reworked and adapted to a different reality, but it is a point of view that starts from specific bases, that has a clear understanding of the matter... this is a FACT.

So, Orion: you say that you quoted my pieces and confronted me with my statements because they are contradictory and confused: it’s false that they are contradictory; but I say this completely without pride, simply: it’s not true. You might say that some were at a different level of specificity (or less so, depending), that in some I used terms instead of others, you can indeed say that they were confused, that’s true, but I really don’t see any contradiction. Regarding the two sentences that I myself admitted to having made a mistake on, I can tell you that it is all too easy to understand that: they are two sentences that do not MINIMALLY change the substance of the discussion, and precisely because they refer to two particulars of two specific songs, they merely served as examples, I think it’s essentially pointless (and quite forced) to elaborate a discussion on that; moreover, the review was written by me two years ago; as I already specified a few posts above, my point of view has evolved, there are my posts, even recently, much more articulated than the review, although still absolutely in line with it.

Poor things, I'm sorry for you that you don't appreciate Yo la tengo.. how sad nonetheless.. there are people capable of taking advantage of any of my statements just to pathetically try to put me in difficulty.. :-: ..of course, far from provoking even the slightest embarrassment in me, I'm actually having a lot of fun.. :-D anyway, you are all invited to watch Yo la tengo, it would do a lot of good for your evidently clouded musical minds ahahahah :-D

therootofitall, the only right you have on the subject of "respect" is to be quiet, since YOU have offended.. I understand, though, that this is a difficult concept for you, given that you keep rambling (whenever it suits you) about "offenses" :-D

Zuckina, yes I know, but I'm pretty pessimistic... I think the SP will put out a crappy album... I saw them back in 2000, but if they come back, I won't miss them live... :-) oh, concert of the year: at the Estragon in Bologna on May 30, Yo la Tengo. Unmissable.

I thought we had started from constructive criticism to get to this.. and instead, I overestimated you, Orion.. well, too bad, I expected the discussion to proceed like it did with Mario, (who from the very beginning wisely started with: "I respect your point of view but..") that is, through an exchange of opinions... not through continuous trumpeting accusations, which at this point are literally manic, resulting in four posts steaming with anger and, in the best-case scenario, sincerely sad. :-) too bad.. goodbye.
