Well, I don't know, I just know she was very beautiful ;-) ..anyway, I think the Julie's didn't do anything from the old records: they all seemed taken from the new ones to me (but keep in mind that their set wasn't a full one).

True what Fest and Zione say as well: but while I can't generalize, neither chronologically nor numerically, I also can't deny that personally I feel quite out of my depth in recent years, as only a few proposals stand out from the endless flood of releases that are thrown at us every month. But I agree with what Fest says: in the '90s, unexpected peaks; this decade so far... well, let’s wait and see. Memoryman, but does your name come from the famous delay? :-)

:-) indeed, habana, as I already wrote, I was fully expecting a reaction like yours; and you're right: the album is not at all on the level of Bad Moon Rising or Evol etc. etc. but let's face reality, please :-) would it have been possible for Sonic Youth at this moment to put out an album at that level? I'm not saying to relativize to the mediocrity of this infamous (for me) decade, but I do say that this album couldn't possibly have the same artistic status as the masterpieces from the '80s: it’s no longer the time, as Giaccoz says, and Sonic Youth are no longer those sonic youth, as it’s biologically obvious... if you don’t look at it from this perspective, then the album would be a priori a failure regardless of its actual structure.

Well, not to say, but what was there to say about this album that was particularly new compared to the others by SY without "taking the song format and going around it"? A bit difficult: it's not an album that can be easily contextualized, and certainly, you can't expect to talk about it in terms of particular modernity like you could with Daydream Nation (almost) 20 years ago. It's not an album where the style radically changes: of course, they aren't going to start playing jazz or funk, Sonic Youth remain (and thank goodness!). It's not a soundtrack or a special album, it's simply the new Sonic Youth with certain coordinates different from the other Sonic Youth albums. If in your view I should have sat down to describe each piece in detail (and uselessly) like a middle school theme, allow me, I could have saved the time of writing it :-D bye

In my opinion, after the '80s SY, you should blast "Washing Machine," which I think is their best from the '90s, and then the last three, with priority on this one :-)
