x lux: I don't like Ulrich at all, you clearly didn't grasp the essence of my argument :-) ..anyway, aside from the double bass and the fact that he is definitely full of himself, Portnoy doesn't stray too far from the prog standards. But then, Phil Collins is 100 times better (just to make a plausible comparison), who has a far greater sense of accompaniment: every feel, rhythm, break is FUNCTIONAL to the song, not functional to one's own expression or mere accompaniment. For this reason, even though Portnoy has some nice ideas, I think he's a very, very limited drummer. In rock, you play as a group. And every part is great when it completes, enriches, not just adds.

You can check the posts from a few months ago, and you'll see the evidence. So if it's supported, it logically follows that it's not particularly forced. Is that it? But who says Portnoy is so much better? The fact that one plays with RHCP and the other with Dream Theater is the only thing that can distinguish them. In terms of dynamics, Chad Smith is superior; this doesn't just mean "he plays piano better" or "he plays loud better," it means that in terms of sound, he is enormously more versatile and much more precise (note: in terms of sound, not timing). Moreover, I don't see any grounds for comparison in terms of creativity, obviously in favor of Smith. I dare someone to create such daring rhythms for essentially canonical pieces like those of the RHCP (of course, I'm not referring to the last three albums, which I think are terrible from every point of view): take "if you have to ask," where he creates a magnificent swing combining funk rhythm with a jazz snare accent. Take the previously mentioned "breaking the girl," where the 12/8 blues is interpreted in a completely non-canonical way; take "suck my kiss," where those accents are literally millimetric in their precision. But then, are we talking about technique as such? Then take "Deep kick"... damn, it has a monstrous independence. He uses all four limbs for a beautiful funk syncopation. They have different styles, but that's clear... what does that have to do with the fact that one is "enormously" superior to the other? It doesn't exist :-)
