I don't know, I've already shared my thoughts on Pornography after listening to everything by the Cure for years... and it definitely seems like a rip-off to me. Have you ever wondered why the Cure was among the few to come out alive from the '80s? Because they have always been pop, because Robert Smith has always been kaleidoscopic and never slowed down too much to get lost in too many "mental wanks" like most of the (pathetic) English new wave bands. From this perspective, Pornography, with its incessant and shallow existentialism, is the real misstep of the Cure.

Teto, I think it takes culture, I think you need to have listened a lot... then of course, it's not a "science," nothing is perfect and a lot remains subjective. But that's why in a discussion we bring arguments to support a certain hypothesis... it all depends on how valid these arguments are. I think if we start discussing methodology we might never end... after all, philosophers far more eminent than us have spent years trying to understand whether even a single proposition makes sense as such... I think we could go on forever: I’m just drawing attention to a standard of judgment that is certainly not valid in absolute terms, but at least based on a minimum of criteria :-D

I never claimed that my tastes constitute universality. In fact, Cellardoor, I never said the records I mentioned above are "my tastes." As far as I'm concerned, I've never really managed to enjoy Captain Beefheart; I just can't get into it, but I acknowledge and recognize its greatness. I mentioned those records precisely because, apart from being valid for my example, they are practically unanimously considered absolute masterpieces. Of course, there will be other references, but it is undeniable that the ones I cited remain significant references. In fact, I would be curious to know what you would consider the "most indicative" references.
Second point: the sense in music is exactly the opposite of what you understood; the contrary of mathematicality, sense is simply the fact that a piece is conceived with a purpose, that is, to express something, to communicate, and not as a pure musical (or cinematic or literary) object without any purpose other than its existence. Now, that expression can and indeed must primarily be unconscious. I'm not talking about writing just any lyrics that talk about something. I don't care about that: I’m talking about expressing with pure musical essence. And "communicating" something is the essence of art. If art didn't communicate, it wouldn't make sense as such. The fact that subjectively one does not find meaning in something is one thing; the fact that something lacks meaning is another. Put it in terms of exclusion, then: certainly I don't understand the meaning of everything I listen to, but I think I'm quite good at grasping when something doesn't make sense (at least in rock).
