Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band Trout Mask Replica

If there is a flaw in your most accurate review, it might be that it doesn't attempt to grasp the essence of the experiment, which could lead the reader to suppose that the captain is a snobbish intellectual with little to say. I too have never managed to get to the bottom of it (at least not in one listen), and personally, I can't assimilate it. But I consciously realize that I am faced with an extraordinary work, so I give it a five and feel complexed about my mediocre intelligence. P.S. Last week in New York there was an exhibit of the captain's (and many other rock artists') visual arts, and I missed it. The only consolation is that I was able to see the New York Knicks instead :-D ..hello psycho!

Among the EPs, in my opinion, this one is not among the best... just to change things up, the most beautiful EPs are actually the ones that came out before and around the same time as this album... that is, Glider and Tremolo, both masterpieces in my opinion! But anyway, in their somewhat insignificant production, there’s not much else... the first two EPs really only make an impact on me, the ones with the other singer (I can't remember his name) with that sepulchral voice like some damn Bauhaus... they don't sound like the same MBV... everything else is still beautiful, though.

Yes, I liked this one more than the other one too.. what can you do, for an album of such caliber I always find something that could have been said and isn't said :-D but it's beautiful!

I certainly don't want to change your mind. I just wanted to draw your attention to the fact that the enormity of the group in question is something, objectively—let's not say otherwise, but certainly rather established. Therefore, giving it even a score of 2 seems absurd to me. Perhaps it means not having made the slightest effort to understand them and/or contextualize them. The fact remains that a score like that, just out of personal preference, is... but then again, everyone has their own way of seeing things. Bye!

x joe: that’s exactly what I was referring to when I mentioned that you’re missing the “full sense”.. because talking about punk, psychedelia, and pop is right for describing the influences.. but this record is so much more than the sum of its influences.. anyway, as you rightly say, everyone has their own style :-) ciao!

x Dave: Crazy to compare (in terms of quality) My Bloody Valentine to Pink Floyd or Soft Machine? I increasingly doubt that you are addressing superficial and childish issues of technical prowess, song structure, or other various fireworks.. and yet, few bands have shown such depth with a language so simple yet packed with incredible emotional charge (and I must point out that I'm not even making a case for historical importance, originality, modernity, which could easily fill a book regarding My Bloody Valentine).. probably it’s precisely the aspect of simplicity in language that naively makes you grimace. If before re-listening you want to get an idea from voices much more authoritative than mine, you can go to The History of Rock Music. My Bloody Valentine: biography, discography, reviews, links .. but you can also refer to less comprehensive or articulated fanzines like My Bloody Valentine - biografia, recensioni, discografia, foto :: OndaRock
enjoy your re-listening
