"But for a moment, I invite even the most passionate supporters to consider that perhaps there was something else going on during those years." Maybe many became aware of those more interesting things precisely thanks to Nirvana, don't you think? Personally, I've written 90 reviews for Debaser, none of which are about Cobain and the gang: I don't believe I'm one-dimensional in my listening habits. As for the MTV discussion, those are two different dimensions. Here on Debaser, we all have a certain musical culture, so I believe we must recognize the history, the merits, and the value of a band: in the case of Nirvana, one could write a novel about their epic journey before "Nevermind" reached the top of the Billboard charts: an anecdote that, as you well remember, I recounted. It was a fundamental moment, absolutely spontaneous and not planned at a drawing board, because the underground river of 80s alternative music was surfacing, preparing a cultural revolution that would change the tastes and perspectives of millions of people. But to say that the myth of Nirvana was created by MTV is not true. That thanks to MTV the phenomenon became something historically and culturally devastating, with sometimes annoying media excesses, is another story.

Yes, Vitalogy, you are absolutely right, but the first one to make a mistake was the reviewer. It seems he is the first to take the Foo Fighters too seriously.

Anyone who links the success of Nirvana to MTV is either acting in bad faith or has a poor historical memory. This album was already a legend before MTV started airing that video non-stop, thanks to the endorsement of college radio stations in the U.S. (the backbone of the American music system), alternative circuits, and the enthusiastic reviews from specialized press, gathering credit that had built up over the previous two years. Their concert in Rome in October '91 was broadcast on Planet Rock, and they were quite well-known in Italy as well. If someone, along with the teenage girls and the more general audience, only got to know them when "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was blasted on MTV, that’s their problem.

"everlong" is a tribute to dinosaur jr, it's something quite different. I also prefer the first album, where there's the best song ever by the FF, "Floaty."

Howdy, do you have something against Nirvana fans? grrrrr. Well-done review: nitpicking a bit, perhaps a touch apologetic (it seems a bit excessive to define it as the most awaited of the last five years: an album is highly anticipated when its predecessor was a huge success; in the case of Radiohead, "Hail to the Thief" was actually the weakest episode of their career) and certainly too long at the beginning. The analysis of the tracks is very detailed: if someone likes Radiohead, they'll love it all; otherwise, just turn the page.

Well, given the sack of dollars on the cover, it must have been quite a rip-off... jokes aside, when I was in Erasmus in Belgium I met a Scottish guy crazy about the Fannies... during our boozy chats (featuring Peket, the magical Belgian liqueur, and Jupiler, the best Belgian beer) this anecdote would come up, particularly focusing on the reputation of our unrestrained drinkers.

Another curiosity: the crown prince of Sweden is a huge fan of theirs. He even joined them on stage once!
