The quality of ballads like "Immortality" or "Indifference" is undeniable, but it is the raw material that is excellent, with a stunning Vedder and the band perfectly at ease in the wake of Young: in those of "Ten," I can feel more of the producer's "hand," with almost new wave melodies intertwining with the solid 70s skeleton of the band. I see Brendan as a great professional; however, I don't believe he is capable of shaping a particularly distinctive sound. In fact, I think he often tends to standardize the sound, making it perfect and creamy, a bit like an Andy Wallace or a Butch Vig. Still, alongside Moulder and Albini, rather than O'Brien, I would mention Terry Date from "Badmotorfinger" and "Vulgar display of power": essential.

Yes, Parashar laid a sweet and sinuous veil over certain ballads, think of the rendition of "times of trouble" on TOTD... the ballads of VS, Vitalogy, and No Code, as beautiful as they are, seem to have all come from the pen of Neil Young, even in the execution (since all the PJ members are big fans of his, I don't think it bothered them at all...)

Yes, that "watermark" is sometimes evident, especially in the faster tracks, like "Why Go" and "Even Flow"... I was referring to the softer moments, especially on the second side.

Then excuse me, you talk to me about marketing strategies behind the success of Nirvana and you mention someone like Reznor (whom I respect a lot, don't get me wrong) who is notoriously a businessman and mentor to artists, someone who has tried everything to stay in the media spotlight (from corpses in music videos to choosing to record "TDS" in the house of the Manson incident)?

I was talking about MTV, not the t-shirts. In 1995, MTV compiled a list of the 50 most important and most played "alternative" videos of the past 10 years, and "Head like a hole" was in the eleventh position, quite a significant placement. This is just to emphasize that there wasn't a Nirvana monopoly on the airwaves, that's all.

For me, Parashar's work on "Ten" was outstanding, especially in making the sounds of tracks like "oceans," "garden," and "release" almost floating and magical. Brendan may have homogenized the PJ sound a bit too much in an "Americana" sense, but "vitalogy" is certainly my favorite by PJ. In the end, what matters is the quality of the songs, and at that time, no matter who the producer was, PJ would have created great albums.

Go, Lewis!

"He sings his 'mass' with a loud flourish and does so without false modesty: made up, masked with that indelible line of eye-liner on his eyes, those teased hair, those outfits that verge on the kitsch but with a voice and a piano that could make you sell your soul or change religion on the spot if needed"... this passage is very striking, Vivis. Richard was undoubtedly the first transgressive and ambiguous character in the history of rock, a cornerstone for countless artists (from the New York Dolls onwards).

Yes, he is missed too. If Lewis, who is the ultimate expert in the field, doesn’t take care of it, I’ll give it some thought...
