In fact, in any English literature, it occupies a substantial space, far from being just a children's classic.

For fans and completists, a beautiful document.
Alice in Chains Black Gives Way To Blue

A formally impeccable record, played, produced, and polished as Master Cantrell commands and free of radio-friendly concessions: but in my opinion, it's devoid of soul and lacking even a shred of an idea that isn't directed towards 1992. At best, it feels like listening to the third part of Jerry's "Degradation trip"; at worst, it reminds me of all those bands that tried to recreate "Dirt" (Godsmack, Taproot, early Staind, etc.) but without Layne's inimitable expressiveness. Sorry Ale, but I'm saving my swim for going to see Ray Allen at the Boston Garden, cheers.

Great review, I still have to buy the album.
Alice in Chains The Essential Alice in Chains

The harmonies and intertwining of the two were certainly the distinguishing feature of the group, but what made Alice in Chains unique IMHO were Staley's performances (not to mention when he composed in the first person, I think of pieces like "head creeps" or the Romerian nightmare of "angry chair," chilling). Cantrell's records lack that little detail to transcend their routine hard rock, catering to those who have shot up "Jar of Lies" and "Dirt," while in the Mad Season album, you can see all of Layne's versatility and eclecticism. Hats off to Jerry for his career and the various "Rooster," but if the various "degradation trip" had sold as much, he would have never resurrected Alice.

Cantrell may have been the main composer, but the unique essence that made Alice in Chains stand out came from Staley: Layne created the Mad Season album without Cantrell, if you know what I mean... Cantrell, without Staley, released two solo albums of no significance.

Noblesse oblige, in these reviews you're like Bernard Hinault giving 9 minutes to everyone in the snow during the Liège-Bastogne-Liège 1980. By the way, what do you think of Bowie not as a producer but as a musician/singer/songwriter?
Curzio Malaparte Coppi e Bartali

So many beautiful duels between Marco and Miguel on the climbs: surely there can be no better judge of the Mortirolo... Malaparte's essay should be read coercively by a good part of today's sports journalists, particularly Bulbarelli, who should read entire passages instead of boring his commentary with details (particularly gastronomic) from the Touring Club.
