Charles Mingus The Great Concert Of Charles Mingus
Voto:
Bitches Brew is a great album especially because it’s one of the first (and most successful) jazz-rock experiments in history. Because the musicians’ chemistry is excellent and the monumental groove of Spanish Key is proof of that. Because listening to Pharaoh's Dance and Bitches Brew feels like hearing a psychedelic band with a jazz twist. Because Miles Runs The Voodoo Down has bass lines and percussion that could level a neighborhood in New York. Because McLaughlin contributes significantly as well. Because Miles is incredibly inspired and it seems like this music was made just for him, as he’s so at ease in the role of jazz(-rock) revolutionary. Then, lux, if it gives you a headache, go listen to some other music, what can I say. :D

I mean Lux, and I should "explain (in words) why that's not true"?... just listen to some jazz records to realize that what you said is nonsense. I don't know, maybe a piece like "Africa" by John Coltrane. "...that jazz is a cultured genre doesn't interest me at all" frankly, it doesn't interest me either, I listen to it because I like it, not to act like a "know-it-all."

Look Emme13, I’ll respond honestly: I’ve thought several times about writing the review, but since I’m not very good at putting my feelings into words, I let it go... however, the question seemed to have a hint of mischief, but I’m sure I’m mistaken... :D

@lux: "terribly self-satisfied"... of course, none of this is absolutely true, but Conte has already explained it to you. Unfortunately, jazz music is often a victim of prejudices. Just to clarify: Bitches Brew is one of my all-time favorite albums... but it has little to do with "classical" jazz.

@lux: Do they even have to threaten you to make you listen to jazz music? :DD

Really great review, dolphy. I haven't listened to this live album by Mingus, but I recently got another live recording from that era, released last year, "Cornell 1964," which was recorded on one of the dates prior to this European tour. The synergy was already high and the album is phenomenal. Mingus's music had a lethal "drive"... something that so many rock bands still dream of today.

As for the band, I like them at times. Their early works (Murmur, Reckoning, etc.) I enjoy quite a bit. The ones from the 90s much less so. For example, "New Adventures..." bores me to death. This I might listen to later.

If you want to do a review of the latest R.E.M., I would be grateful... :D

Quite a good reception. The album is astonishing now, just imagine it back then (1964). A revolutionary scream lasting 30 minutes. MONUMENTAL.

With this review, you piqued my curiosity; I’ll try to listen to it... at worst, I’ll have a good laugh. :D
