Larrok, I absolutely do not agree with you, even though I love both "rock bottom" and "spiderland." Just listen to "Atlantis" to enter the universe of Sun Ra, and it has NOTHING to envy in terms of expressive potential to the two albums you mentioned.

Muffin, I didn't mean to reduce Ellington to the level of a Casadei. I was merely pointing out the function of his music in its time. Of course, it was of the highest level, there’s no doubt about that...

I mean Lux, do you really get yourself into all these mental loops while listening to a record??? message-non message, communicate-do not communicate...damn, but isn't putting on a record "just" for the joy of listening to it ever an option? :DD To tell you, the music of the big bands from the first half of the '900 (Duke Ellington first and foremost) was pure entertainment, swing made people dance...it seems at least pointless to look for particular messages in music like this, don’t you think? And it's beautiful music to listen to (for me, obviously). Stop.

But you see, Lux, it’s difficult for me to answer a question like this, since I tend to "live" music. I could tell you about the sound of the sax, listening to excellent musicians who understand each other wonderfully (like Coltrane's quartet)... but those are things that come to mind in the moment. I'm not able to convey to others the emotions I feel when listening to certain records. For example, to go back to B. Brew, between telling someone "it has an amazing groove" and actually making them listen to it, everything changes. I don’t know if I’ve made myself clear.

"Well, at least you replied" --> Damn, thanks for the consideration!

"In a vague way"... bah. Based on what is it one of the first jazz-rock experiments? ---> I don't understand the confusion, it's a historical fact. "the camaraderie expressed this way is merely presumed" ---> it's presumed from the high quality of the music and the "drive". Miles is incredibly inspired ---> double what?.. no you’re right, it sounds like crap :DDD

Ajeje, I don't think dolphy meant a "superior culture," but rather a more trained ear for these sounds.

And then lux you have to explain to me HOW I CAN CONVINCE YOU IN WORDS of how beautiful an album is. It's impossible. Just look at the case of Bitches Brew: I love it, you think it's terrible... who is right?

Dolphy, I wanted to write Zappa's quote myself... :D
