Charles Mingus The Great Concert Of Charles Mingus

Just think that even now, after several years during which jazz has flirted with rock, it is an album so "strange" and "alien" that many people still struggle to find the thread of the matter, even among jazz listeners themselves. Probably good old Miles was looking "too" far ahead. :D

If we want to be precise, all music should be listened to carefully. Whether it's rock, jazz, blues, classical, or metal.

Well lux, you're right that BB should be listened to with particular attention. Played in the background, it doesn't even convey 20% of its potential; it's an album that needs to be "lived." If you feel like it, give it another shot—maybe one day the so-called spark will ignite. :D

Instead, BB got into my head after just a few listens. I mean, I don’t find any particular difficulty in listening to it. However, I think the idea of "getting some experience" with simpler records before diving into BB is the best approach in certain cases. Or at least I believe that a listener "used to" certain music (jazz, in this case) has an easier time than someone who approaches jazz directly with BB. Maybe it’s a matter of, how can I put it, “getting into the mindset” first...but these are just theories.

Anyway, one last thing (and I just realized I've turned Dolphy's excellent review into a chat, I hope he'll forgive me..:D), Lux, try to listen to "Atlantis" by Sun Ra. Being a fan of the Residents, you should like it, especially since that album was a great source of inspiration for them. In fact, the first track, "Mu," would fit perfectly in a Meet The Residents.

Lux, perhaps I expressed my thoughts a bit too strongly. If I offended you, I apologize. Heaven forbid a musical discussion turns into a sports brawl.

I mean to say that (IN MY OPINION) it's pointless to overthink every record, that's all. Who ever told you that you can't replicate? Who ever silenced you? Do you find the opposite ridiculous?... that's perfectly fine, I'm not offended. Just a simple difference of opinion.

After all, if Coltrane and Mingus don’t mean much to you, I don’t know what else to say, set jazz aside.

Lux, let's do it this way: you don't listen to jazz anymore, don't come to write about music "that leaves you cold," okay?—with this, I simply wanted to say that probably jazz isn't YOUR music, so it's pointless for us to talk for hours since we both stay on the same positions... I hope I've clarified the sentence that could have been misinterpreted.

Lux, just stay calm and know that I take these discussions pretty lightly, but what do you think? Moreover, I don't want to force you to say that jazz is the best since I don't believe there's a genre superior to another. Do I want to create dictatorial regimes? buahahahaha I hope you're joking... And anyway, yes Lux, the fact that you want to find meaning and underlying concepts in ALL works seems ridiculous to me... it's just my opinion... so just relax.
