Dario Argento Suspiria

Thanks for the advice, happypippo. I've seen Fulci's "L'aldilà," which many consider his best film, and it's not bad at all, but something is missing in Fulci. Is it Argento's technique? An adequate budget? I don't know, but looking at Dario Argento, for example, in "Suspiria," I see a true filmmaker, as you have stated, while with Fulci I see a good director with original insights. I will definitely watch "Come si sevizia un paperino" and also "L'aldilà," maybe I'll change my mind ;-). Bava is a gap that I hope to fill as soon as possible…

As I already mentioned, in movies the plot often matters little; indeed, great directors manage to distinguish themselves by creating masterpieces through simple storylines. So it’s true that the plots of Dario Argento are nothing special, just as it’s also true that the actors in his films aren’t exactly exceptional. However, the settings, the suspense, the fear—these are all elements present in early Argento, and they are fundamental in horror and thriller films. Moreover, he is a director attentive to detail, and in *Suspiria*, the sets and cinematography are sublime... I don’t know Bava, but for example, compared to Fulci, Dario Argento is light years ahead in my opinion, both technically and in his ability to generate anxiety and fear in the viewer! L’aldilà by Fulci didn’t really have an effect on me; it didn’t evoke fear upon watching it, even though I’m aware that as a film it was significant for some scenes that have entered the horror imagination (like the one with the spiders) and were later referenced by other directors.

Poletti, instead of being snobbish and becoming ridiculous in the eyes of others, why don’t you allow people to express their damn opinion? Realize that you don’t have the absolute truth. You’ve already shown in your music reviews that you are ignorant and ridiculous... well, in the end, you’re a folkloric element of Debaser, and we accept you even for your nonsense!

In agreement with Fidia and the reviewer, the final minutes are truly terrifying and in my opinion, this is Dario Argento's best film. The fairy-tale setting, the colors, the cinematography, the sets demonstrate how even with a simple plot, masterpieces can still be created—a quality that many current directors lack. In the film, the plot is important, but it is not the fundamental element; even with a banal story, masterpieces can be created because cinema is art, and art is often an ode to the banal and the everyday. It’s a pity that the macabre and gothic atmospheres of the early Dario Argento have completely vanished from his current films; "Il fantasma dell'opera" is indeed a very ordinary film, and it feels like we are facing a completely different director from the one who made "Suspiria" or "Profondo rosso." Nevertheless, "La chiesa" or "La setta," as far as I remember, are not bad films; the decline came later. Certainly, "Suspiria" is probably the artistic zenith of Argento.

Beautiful, poetic in some images, like those of the city in the clouds or the final scene where the entire galaxy is visible, not to mention that great character that is Yoda. Star Wars, I think, was one of the first sci-fi films to incorporate a mystical and esoteric discourse within a sci-fi context; then Matrix would take it further from this perspective. But the vastness of the landscapes, the conflict of good and evil, the revelation about Darth Vader—it breathes an epic air that was lacking in the already beautiful first chapter and in the subsequent "Return of the Jedi," which in some parts is even better, if only for the legendary Jabba! A truly complete review.

so much fun! Three stars seems a bit scarce, actually. Not everyone makes their debut this way.

Poletti, maybe not everyone is a block of marble like you, I give it a 3 (I can't give more) simply because as a child it was one of my favorite movies, because it featured what were then my favorite actors, so the rating is nostalgic, dear Poletti. It's a shame that one always has to justify...
