Technically, they are light years away from billions of groups... I mean, they really play commendably (of course, putting everything in the context of power), but it’s not that they compose poorly; they just don’t compose at all. Everything sounds the same, it feels like listening to a single song for almost an hour.

Yes, but Splinter... with the metal à la System Of A Down "fandango" has nothing to do with it... at most there might be references to Opeth... Regarding the album, for me it remains, along with 12-5, their best.

truly beautiful work, they've removed some complexity in favor of melody in my opinion, and it suits me just fine. Top-notch musicians, songwriting of great depth, engaging, fascinating, and never meandering album. Perhaps they've become more "normal," but still years ahead... Impeccable review, precise, flowing perfectly, but this was already known ;)
