Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness

My memory of this album is also tied to my girlfriend at the time. But since that went rather poorly, let’s say I put it aside. However, I admit it got on my nerves that an 18-year-old girl would get so caught up in MY Smashing Pumpkins. Anyway, aside from non-musical reasons, it's definitely not my favorite. I got to know them with Siamese Dream, and that one (+ Pisces Iscariot) remains the best. By this point, Corgan's ego had already derailed, causing serious damage to the band's economy and balance. It could have easily been a normal album and not an intrusive double. Plus, the more famous songs didn’t excite me even at the time (1979 still makes my hands itch). But where was the poetry of Mayonaise? Additionally, I saw them live in Milan back in '96, and the number of teenagers there made me realize it was better to listen to Kyuss, who had just split up...

I miss it, I try to buy it but then I think twice, I can never seem to be ready for the depression it brings, according to many of those who recommend it to me. Beautiful as always, Lewis, and happy new year!

I’m sorry to read in the comments above that the new generations do not grasp the self-irony veiled with political conviction of Ferretti & Co. I'm sorry because musically they may suck, but a song like Punk Islam still has one of the most simultaneously surreal and serious lyrics of the '80s. "Allah is great, Gaddafi is his prophet!" remains a provocative stroke of genius (let’s remember the F111s over Libya during those years). It’s funny that the number 1 enemy of the West at that time has now become a symbol of moderate Islam…. eh, historical memory seems to be reduced to a span of two or three years now.

I won't comment on the album because I've been unwittingly flooded with j-pop and similar trash when I lived there. I only want to say that you’re the only person I know (and doesn’t speak Japanese) who correctly writes sayonara with the elongation on the O (it actually becomes ou).

I've always been attracted to this record, but never really delved into it. Just to ask, does it sound cacophonous like the Shaggs, just to make a comparison, or were they at least trying a bit? I had always thought ESP stood for Extra Sensory Powers, but I'm not sure if the acronym was in use in the '60s.

Well said, Don, without "what's become of the baby" it would be a masterpiece. "China Cat St. Stephen's" and "mountain of the moon" are amazing. And "cosmic charlie" is right up there too! Anyway, you can tell that we've arrived "late" to the serious work in the studio. Like for everyone, "Live Dead" remains the best because it captures the band in its natural environment, even if it's a bit late compared to "Golden Gate concert" and stuff like that.

"you really got me" practically gave rise to the garage scene in America, just a year before sonics & Co. Words from Sky Saxon.

I quote Bartle, if you're not in the mood, don't write a review. Or rather, don't say you can do it in 10 minutes, especially for a record like this. Also, congratulations on the arrogance (I hope you were joking) when you respond to Colossal Youth... you remind me of a certain Francis from years ago... and that's not a compliment. I would say to keep it low-key, it never hurts. The album is the best along with Crown of Creation.

I have to listen to it properly; I've had it for ages, but I got it to make a "bibliography." But your excellent review really makes me want to put it on tomorrow while I'm going to work. And I have to say I'm really envious of Farner's sideburns... a true wolfman!

I have some issues with this album... considered a masterpiece by everyone, it has one major problem: the vocals. In some cases (eastern light) they're fantastic, or rather they fit well; in others, they make me want to smash the album. So I can't really call it a masterpiece. In terms of guitar intertwining, it's remarkable, but it has this flaw that I just can't get past. As for the recording, let's say I'll wait for the next one to judge, although I hardly ever give ratings anyway.
