The Last Shadow Puppets The Age of the Understatement
Voto:
That perfidious Albion was as important as the States in the '60s and '70s makes sense, but I don't believe that in the '90s. Anyway, it’s been a while since anything unpadded and standardized has come out from those lands. Arctic and these puppets included. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice little disco, very Spector wall of sound-ish, with a few sly melodies reminiscent of Morricone, but without this promotional push, no one would care about them. Expiration date: two weeks.
Afterhours I milanesi ammazzano il sabato

I don’t understand how people still look at this privileged Milanese guy as a vate of our music. Back in the day (a beautiful time), I liked them; they were a breath of fresh air, especially with Hai Paura del Buio. But after seeing them live during that tour and witnessing Agnelli's arrogance (which was confirmed by subsequent encounters) and his provincial star poses (common to half of the Italic people who receive a bit of media attention, so it’s not solely his fault), I decided I wouldn’t give them the slightest bit of attention. Up until Non è per sempre, I tried to focus only on their music without picturing their annoying faces. But from then on, even the music contributed to my disdain, and I buried them. Just hearing his milanese accent makes me want to invade Poland. And I can only agree with the reviewer on the last sentence (and the rating is for that, not for anything else since the album will remain light-years away from my home).
Motorpsycho Another Ugly EP

my favorite EP, and you bastard are a piece of shit inside since you took away the only unreviewed track by the Psycho that I wanted to cover... anyway, inspiration is lacking and your work is great. I would have spent a few more words on She Used To BE A Twin, one of my favorite tracks by MP, and they often perform it live (like Blueberry Daydream)

the previous one was really bad, this raises the bar a bit, but the ideas are lacking. Perhaps the best remains Thickfreakness. Barely sufficient.

terrible, bought almost blind in the Japanese edition. Two balls as big as watermelons, along with Ars Longa Vita Brevis by Nice one of the few prog albums I own that makes me sick. Pompous and a bit pretentious, especially that fucking obsession with redoing classical music. There are countless examples of prog bands that did excellent things without resorting to classical. Oh well, I’ll sell it on eBay.

If by someone you mean me, Bonny, you’re mistaken. I’ve been fighting, more or less, since you were born against anti-relativists (cultural and otherwise). I repeat, relativizing is one thing, revising is another. I get angry about this point, and not specifically with Il Paolo, who at least openly doesn’t seem to want to do it. Unfortunately, relativism is easy to apply straightforwardly, often transforming it into revisionism. Much more difficult is to apply it critically. Relativism applied haphazardly is nothing but its opposite, absolutism. That is to say, a leveling of differences. And by differences, I do not mean the dichotomy of beautiful/ugly, better/worse, so no hierarchical scale.

For my response, see ajeje and contemplation. Especially the point regarding "taking us for a ride." A latent feeling since the beginning, but much more after seeing the word "mission" written (god, it really pisses me off when people use that goddamn term from Milanese managers), but it would only be a good thing if it were reality. And the discussion about the NUMBER of contacts. Let's not forget that for half of those here, this is nothing but a pure and simple showcase of their ego. Ah, and I do not underestimate the audience, nor do I elevate myself to positions of cultural superiority. BUT I am careful not to make this a cultural a-hierarchy a way to flatten everything. This is not the purpose of the so-called cultural studies that are responsible for the reevaluation in the academic field of popular texts (well, it would go back further, but that would take a while and I don’t remember, aside from Eco and McLuhan, the authors); analysis doesn’t deny respect (for the work I mean), but with the brain always tuned to reevaluation and revisionism. With this, I believe I'm done, and I don't think that Il Paolo's mission is this anyway. Good mission to everyone.

In my metal past, this cover attracted me precisely because I didn't understand it. Yes, the name is inspired by Tolkien and the album artwork depicts Elric of Melnibone by Michael Moorcock. The devil and the holy water of fantasy.

I read the review by Paolo, but it didn't clarify much for me nor did it dispel doubts about the necessity of your recoveries (apart from the fact that you feel like writing about them, which, since Debaser is open to everyone, is already sufficient reason). I would almost prefer if you exalted those truly forgettable pieces of crap; the operation would seem less dangerous in my eyes. Instead, your always calm and collected tone in reviews and comments strikes me as a sort of "goodism" à la Rispoli. I agree with the non-division between high and low culture, but your well-written musings always end up languishing in the void of mediocrity (and not the Buddhist one), never expressing any defined positions, and I always get a vague aftertaste of "let's all get along." I would also like to find gold in the dung, but it happens once in a million. And even if the percentage of crap in '80s cinema is horrendously high, it doesn't mean that everything (even the lowbrow stuff like this) hides something that necessarily has enough value to be highlighted. A few more words on the evolution and the damage (and here I agree with Poletti) that the Vanzina brothers have caused and continue to perpetuate would have been nice to see, because I always hope you don't hide in this calm demeanor a true love for this stuff (which is not a bad thing, but it would be a sneaky approach, almost to avoid the criticism of half the users). Anyway, this is a personal critique from someone who knows this film practically by heart but cannot fathom how, and especially why, to spend words on a film whose keys to interpretation are already completely decipherable at 12 years old. The rest seems like talking to oneself. But I repeat, Paolo, you are obviously free to do as you please; I'm not here to criticize you as if I were a censor of the site.

I still have to figure out whether I like them or not. I've had them for a couple of years, but they've never grabbed me enough to give them my full attention. Anyway, they're still there on the HD, they won’t run away, and sooner or later...
