I was referring to the increased interest in Korean and Chinese films over the last 2-3 years. But in the end, I was also lost in thought while writing the comment. I wanted to say... it is impossible NOT to read the film as a tribute to the USA-East conflict. And indeed, the use of cinema for propaganda purposes and to strengthen nationalist morale is nothing new in Hollywood.

the visuals are spectacular, but the dialogues are cringeworthy (her speech at the council? how many times is the word "freedom" used? and how many times the word "nation"!!?? in 480 BC, I don't think the concept of "nation" existed... which is a blatantly political term). aside from that, the prevailing machismo, the virile friendship, and the almost total inability to see any references to the America-East conflict make it an almost "fascist" film at times. however, the cinematography is beautiful. the epic scene where Tomba bursts into the shack full of crooks (which seems absolutely like a drill, with not even a hint of tension) and lets off bursts of gunfire into nothing while shouting "OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH!!!!" for two and a half minutes... I mean... a scene like this is truly priceless.
