two things. 1 don't mess with rhapsody (they are the best of the best of the best (de-gustibus, but that's the truth..)) 2 don't mess with petrucci (really good); suspended animation is a great album, rich in melody, inspiration, and plenty of enjoyable technique (it's true that Petrucci usually seems bound, even in this album, to precise patterns, which sometimes make his music a bit cold and calculated, but this is a peculiarity of his, so I appreciate it...). Petrucci knows much beyond metal, and I think there's no doubt about that... I still remember (a jetto) listening to a night with john petrucci and jordan rudess to hear a Petrucci who manages to surpass himself and go beyond the "usual patterns" that often characterize him..

I’ll just make a little comment after reading a sentence from Frasco (I admit I haven’t read the discussion)... It doesn’t mean anything if Dominici left the theater before the Marrillon, and Labrie comes from a glam group... on the contrary... it means Labrie is ā€œbetterā€ because the theater had a breakthrough with him (and not with Dominici, with whom they still managed to get noticed... it seems logical to me...)

rece good and excellent record. Highly refined and complete work, alongside awake it remains one of the most beautiful metal albums of all time (dse-gustibus, of course).

Steve Vai Passion And Warfare

I’ll briefly share my thoughts and interject for a moment... Bowie’s judgment seems to be alarmingly simplistic and shallow. As others have already said, those who truly know Vai consider him the perfect conjunction of technique and melody, feeling and personality, a highly technical guitarist and an emotional one (am I exaggerating??). If you really know Vai, you wouldn’t say that his immense technique serves only itself. If he’s self-congratulatory at times, so much the better... even speed for its own sake can be exhilarating, but it’s just one facet of Vai’s music. Vai has never composed a piece solely aimed at speed (like "Far beyond the sun" in the case of Malmsteen, but let’s not bring him into this; perhaps my example is also out of place...). Vai is simply a complete, varied, and dynamic musician. "For the love of god" (for me, as well as for many professional guitarists) is the most beautiful piece ever written for electric guitar. "Shy boy" is an example of speed that isn’t for its own sake but rather in search of frenzy, ardor, excitement, and fury.

I completely agree with marco85 and jettojet. The great guitarists of today worship Vai; saying that "Steve Vai is a good guitarist, gifted with feeling and technique, but not a good composer. Period. Peace and goodwill" doesn't seem very accurate to me, but perhaps I've misunderstood.
