The Verve Urban Hymns

A curiosity: I saw Ashcroft live when he was opening for another band; he rattled off one monotonous, personality-less ballad after another, causing the audience to doze off, and then at the end, he dropped "Bittersweet Symphony," and it was a triumph. You could tell from a mile away how much he was seeking the warmth of the audience, the success that eluded him... I have to say it touched my heart, even though I consider him a two-bit artist.

"Bittersweet Symphony" is indeed a good tune to whistle, I would say one of the most memorable from the (for me) rather unmemorable Brit-pop era. However, the rest of the album is strikingly lackluster, overall inferior even to the modest debut. Well-written review, although a bit too biographical.

It's a film with a two-line plot; however, it doesn't tell a story but rather conveys a feeling, that of loss, and it does so without falling too much into sentimentality. However, the film is definitely too bare for my taste, with many dead moments where nothing happens.

"emanates very little of the sacred" and this is perhaps the greatest merit of this film: the seraphic and otherworldly Jesuses of so many little films had become somewhat annoying, this at least makes Jesus more human and less divine, even at the risk of a certain superficiality. Excellent review.

Hallucinatory film, perhaps even too much so, yet it leaves a mark.
