The film is not bad, but Sean Penn's perspective is certainly not experimental as the reviewer claims. Anyway, what I feel I can say about both the book and the film is that perhaps both authors take the protagonist's side a bit too much (though the book explains certain choices better and presents other viewpoints). In short, they try to sell him to us as a hero, but in the end, to put it very simply, he was just a young guy who died for the mere fact that he didn’t have a map of the area he was in. The raging river could have been crossed by backtracking to the source, there were several shelters used by hunters in the area stocked with emergency supplies, and the highway was about 30 miles away (he wasn’t exactly in the middle of nowhere, shall we say). However, I won't deny the allure that the character can inspire - and in fact, does inspire.
