Dream Theater Live In Tokyo/5 Years in A Livetime (DVD)

Yes, but just the fact that they influenced the prog metal scene so much is a big deal. Of course, I don't want to give them credit for influencing music in every expression, but in their own way, they made an impact. Regarding the theatricality: every prog band was theatrical! But did Rick Wakeman or Keith Emerson really play all those keyboards?

So, starting from the assumption that technique for its own sake is sterile and ultimately useless, one must ask: are Dream Theater just technique and nothing more? I don't think so. Those who say this have evidently listened to their works either with earplugs or in a very superficial way. In their albums, there are ideas, memorable melodies (those are not the offspring of technique), involvement. This doesn't mean that everything that glitters is gold, because sometimes even the Theater falls into the error of wanting to overdo it, as for example in the quite good Train of Thought or in the verbose Live at Budokan, but most of the time their technique is put at the service of the compositions and not vice versa. Are Dream Theater the best musicians around? I think there is no question more stupid. Someone mentioned Dave Weckl; I add John Patitucci or Stanley Clarke on bass, John Scofield, Mike Stern on guitar, Chick Corea or Joe Zawinul on keyboards, and in the rock realm, any musician from Toto. What the hell does that mean? There are tons of better musicians out there. That's what is sterile, the competitions over who is better.

Come on, we can also discuss it in the reviews dedicated to the band, so as not to exclude potential interested parties. As for the detractors, of whom there are many, I think it's always enriching to know their opinions, often vivid, but still interesting.

Overwhelmed, so to speak: basically, they will have no more record market. The name Mr Big comes from a song by the Free.

I mean, can you review the Eagles and put a picture of Steve Vai there? It's fine that I deduce from your nickname that he's your idol, but this seems excessive. This is a more horrible review than that of Sex and Religion.

Their first three albums are a must. Then they will be swept away by the Seattle cyclone.

Shameful review both in form and spirit. The album, however, is excellent and will feature the debut of the crazy Devin Townsend as a singer, as well as Vai tackling hard rock that is anything but trivial and, above all, not very commercial.

Everything is great. Too bad this great band only achieved success after the passing of the great Chris Oliva.
