As for the tricks in the studio, I'm all for them (even if there aren't any here), I care about the result. And who cares if you call offside on someone who improves the quality of the record with studio techniques?

Oops! Just saw your comment, I was writing on yours while you were writing on mine, about the same issue (the ratings). I really don't know, but I think that if someone is interested in an album or a band, they don't just look at the little number, right? If you think differently, reply, I’m interested in hearing other opinions.

I'm not giving any more. I've been sterilized; I no longer procreate on deB with little numbers. The review is well-written (sorry for the perhaps presumptuous tone, but it's not obvious here on deB), though it feels a bit fanboyish. Personally, without getting into stylistic issues, I greatly appreciate those who point out the flaws candidly; flattery has never convinced me... regarding "Born in the USA," I wasn't aware of the little story, but I know very well that it's not a gratuitous exaltation of Amerika; I thought you would have understood that by reading my previous post.

For those who lack patience, Kosmo, no problem! Nobody is obligated to read, I also skim through some, but if I'm interested, I prefer them to be long and detailed. Ah, Hoist is a nice album, but this and Picture are really on another level for me. Anyway, the Phish concerts are truly surreal: I've seen many videos of their shows, and watching the Phisheads makes you wonder: what are they laughing about? I mean, you see two hundred thousand people jumping and dancing like in the neo-punk videos on MTV, except there it’s all a facade and they get paid, with Phish it happens for real! It reminds me of Supergiovane when Mangoni says "cocacola con aspirina a tutti! e tra cinque minuti voglio vedervi tutti in acido!", only at Phish concerts the 5 minutes must have already passed... a friend of mine can't listen to them because he thinks they're "too happy." Well, on record it's a bit different, they're more composed, but a Phish concert is an experience; there are people who really follow them at every show and there's a true community, like Debaser ;)

Massimof, don’t take it the wrong way, Caz would rather get castrated than spend an hour listening to Springsteen. That said, he knows quite a bit about music (then you pay me, Caz), but he doesn’t like simple things. I have to admit that I hated Springsteen for years; I knew nothing about him, but he was the one from "Born in the USA," which seemed to me like the most shameless anthem for Bush supporters. Then, after listening to him (and reading the lyrics), I realized it wasn’t quite like that, but I’m definitely into the more intimate Springsteen, the one from Nebraska and some tracks from River (Stolen Car, how much I love Stolen Car). I’m not a big fan of concerts either because, despite the great energy, they’re not focused on the music; they’re centered on Springsteen, just like Queen concerts were all about Mercury. Too much of "I’m the coolest," "I’m the rebel," if you know what I mean. In person, he seems to be a very approachable and likable guy, unlike, say, Dylan, who acts aloof to inhuman levels. It’s just that Dylan is non-negotiable; he’s a legend, whereas Springsteen is the show-off. In short, sometimes in evaluating music, the perception of the persona takes center stage…

for anonimo: Blue Valentines is very beautiful but it doesn’t represent Waits for what he is justly famous for (it's a more traditional album, from a jazz singer), I recommend Rain Dogs (then Swordfishtrombones) which give you the exact stylistic essence of the character. Here he reworks all popular genres (rumba, polka, calypso, samba, country, tarantellas…), adding various noises, found objects used as instruments, in his personal vision of the blues. In my humble opinion, Waits is the greatest composer (in terms of compositional ability, even before results) in the history of blues.

For Caz: I don’t want to say nonsense, but it seems like they also hold the record for the concert with the most spectators of the '90s, regardless of the genre. And around here, they clearly get no attention. I've had Oysterhead for a couple of months; I put them on once, but people showed up, so it became background music. I need to listen to it again, but I have a lot on my plate... of course, they are three legends. Oh, I listened to the first Mr. Bungle; they're no joke either in terms of variety! Now I'm going to listen to Disco volante...

Massimof, (it's becoming a real cliché this story), but I don’t give ratings for various reasons. Besides those found in my review of From Her to Eternity by Nick Cave (if you really care;)), I also don’t give them because I would seem very strict compared to the average debaseriani. If you’re interested, for me this is a 3.5 (which is a very high rating in my book; by the way, 4.5 for From Her to Eternity and 5 for Lorca really throw me under the bus), which clearly doesn’t convey the real idea. In short, a number doesn't really say anything, and I don’t care at all about the grading system like in school, which, among other things, is often influenced more by personal likes and dislikes for the reviewer or the album than by the actual quality of the writing and the expertise, which should be the only things that matter. A nice comment is better. Anyway, Picture of Nectar is superior in certain individual tracks (Llama, Chalkdust Torture, and Poor Heart above all), which are also more "compact," more like songs, but I don’t like everything. Lawn Boy might not have the peaks of Picture, but it’s one of the very few albums that to me is worth listening to from the first to the last note; it’s a pleasure to listen to.
