Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band Trout Mask Replica

"Many of us are terrified by this record": it's true, with the legends (another: they can't play... but the Mothers of Invention are playing) that surround it, it's hard not to listen to it while being somewhat biased. I have some doubts, however, about whether it's truly revolutionary, given that in many ways it does the same things that free jazz musicians have been doing for quite some time.

Well, maybe it simply means "you're not into it, brother." This applies to you and it applies to me, huh; if you're not in sync with an album, you'll just find it boring. For instance, Dead C initially made me doze off, then something clicked and my perception changed. Because Irrlicht (I mention that because Schulze is now a superstar like Justin Timberlake) seems way more of a drag than this one, which has some really lively moments. It’s also clear that it could totally suck for someone who understands it perfectly, but frankly, the label of a boring album seems unfair.

@kimdeal: think that I was about to write that a myth to debunk about this album is the fact that it's so heavy, in a world of dead c, borbetomagus and klaus sciulzi, and really, there are hundreds of records that are much weightier and heavier than this. In fact, it has many moments that seem absolutely fun to me (many of which were mentioned by psycho, like moonlight on vermont or veteran day poppy). Another thing is: do you always listen to albums from start to finish? I mean, it's a curiosity I've had for a long time: this is an album made up of self-sufficient tracks; does listening to a few tracks one time and a few others another ruin the experience for you?

Ah, but they're not new; they’re an Australian group from the mid-eighties, reminiscent of Melvins, Kyuss, Albini, but with a bluesy twist. I've read from several sources that Albini might have copied one of their tracks with Kerosene (not sure if you're familiar with it, but just to give you an idea...), and indeed there’s quite a resemblance. There’s even a review of their first on Deb. If you get a chance, take a look; it’s really worth it, in my humble opinion. Even the bio on Allmusicguide is spot on for once.

You don't know, you're mistaken on this, Gaber and Colli were together when she ran for Forza Italia (in the Milan council, or am I talking nonsense?), and he even voted for her. Honestly, to accuse Gaber of selling out to anyone is a bit foolish, considering that even in his lyrics he was always uncomfortable and practiced doubt, not holding back on criticism of the left. As a musician, however... I don’t know, the lyrics by Luporini and his interpretations were always intelligent, but musically it can't be denied that aside from a few exceptions, he was always absolutely negligible, to say the least, given that they are simple (not very brilliant) sound backdrops for the voice. Without making comparisons with Fossati, who was definitely better as a musician, even though he doesn’t excite me.

I apologize, but "learn humility" coming from you is just laughable, it's enough to die of laughter and then resurrect. I don't know everything about Degregori, but I know quite a bit; it’s not like I have to pretend not to know to be modest, and I realize what another person knows. It's like me saying that the song "wish you were here" is the best thing from the last twenty years of Pink Floyd. I mean, it immediately makes clear to anyone who knows the albums the level of nonsense being discussed.

dragged into it because, simply, even though I don’t agree more than once, he shows with what he writes a balance and, above all, a clear knowledge of the records he discusses. Now, by saying that you save "raggio di sole" and "la storia" (not bad songs, but clearly lesser compared to a lot of other things he did during that period and even afterwards) you show that you don’t know the later De Gregori. If you want, I can make you a list of dozens of better songs from that period and beyond, but I’m not interested, because those exchanges with you don’t lead to discovering music or reasoning about something; they are discussions where you want to be right about something.
