Ok, Hal, about the "opera at the theater" issue, you have to keep in mind that lately, with all this experimental nonsense, the performances are often poor and dilapidated. So, you might also risk getting a bad deal (every now and then, I see on TV a version with Pietro Ballo from a few years ago set on a beach with deck chairs)... so the judgment should still be weighed solely based on listening to the CD... and a bit of imagination.

@ pio Hal: yes, more than the culture of the loggione, which seems to me exclusively reserved for connoisseurs, I would speak of the simpler "theater culture," that of those who have annual subscriptions to theaters and take an interest in everything that is presented. Nevertheless, it is a largely mature audience.

Uh, the above period was a bit Cicero-bordellaro, I hope I made myself clear.

@ rosablu Josi: I argue that, as I may have hinted, Concerto and Sonata, partly due to the fact that there is no vocal message (which in opera weighs down the composition for some by exposing the famous "otherness of CONTENT-BASED language"), and partly because they do not necessarily fall within the genre of long compositions - or rather, they certainly do not lend themselves to an extension like that of a canonical opera (see Wagner and the five hours plus of the Mastersingers, but that's an extreme) - turn out to be more digestible... it is a fact that when approaching classical music, there is always interest in Beethoven, Mozart - classical -, Chopin etc., but Puccini, Wagner, Rossini, Boito etc. are often disregarded; one explanation could be the one just stated.

Your grandfather wasn't entirely right: Patty Pravo never let out a squeak; in fact, she didn't really sing at all.

Reviews can also have a negative slant, although I want to specify that I never said Coccoluto's music isn't music... maybe you read it between the lines, but I definitely didn't say that ;) Kisses, let's love each other.

However, on one thing you are right: music must EVOKE, right. As for the rest, I don't even know what you are referring to, because I certainly have never talked about cultured and less cultured music; in fact, by stating that I was proceeding by "hierarchy of presumption," it was as if I were making self-criticism. I don’t know if today’s youth are informed about new trends; certainly, it does not mean that the new trends you are referring to should be considered pleasant and evocative by everyone, including me.
