I would like to raise a question that I’ve had for a while: Portnoy is considered a great drummer on all metal forums… now I wonder, what is so great about Portnoy? NOTHING imho! I mean, with the double kick he does nothing (the most mediocre black drummer is faster than him, not to mention people like Dave Lombardo), I’ve never heard him do anything “unconventional” in rhythm (drummers like Tomas Haake or Gene Hoglan would eat Portnoy for breakfast), he doesn’t even seem like a great virtuoso to me, having heard some extreme drummers like Derek Roddy or Pete Sandoval, imho much more technical than him, and ultimately, as a versatile drummer, I don’t consider him a champion (a drummer like Hellhammer goes from blast beat to prog-fusion touch with the ease of a Formula One driver changing gears). Let me hear your opinions!
