For years, it was my favorite live album before I discovered Dylan's bootleg series.

moretto the only song dedicated to or rather inspired by Winona is Lost Cause and with this I’ve said it all, then for those who know this artist well, his official discography and otherwise as I do, it’s not so hard to understand what he was inspired by (both music and lyrics) by his own admission. The greatness of Beck is exactly this: not only is he an innovator, but he also knows how to recover the roots of American music, which is no small cultural operation. Who knows how many kids at his concerts after hearing his version of I've Heard a Lonesome Whistle have gone to seek out the original version, or his version of Sin City... and so I smile too, I smile with joy because there are still characters like Beck around, who see music in 360°, who know everything about music and every Beck album has this particularity (like all great albums) of making you go searching, or rather hunting, for what has been A PART (not everything) of his inspiration, just like all those who have heard Jackass and went to listen to Baby Blue, the song by Dylan covered by Them (their second album is a supporting wall of Odelay) which provides a magical backdrop to that beautiful song. Art calls art, culture calls culture. That’s how it works. Sometimes it’s better to smile less and listen more, and learn to look at things from all angles; sometimes the result can be really surprising.

Emulator? On the contrary, he has been able to make his love for this music personal and original. Sea Change is not a record of pain (the record of pain was Odelay, composed and dedicated to the late grandfather, the true conceptual inspiration of his art). Sea Change is the record of love, the great tribute that Beck wanted to dedicate to his musical heroes and influences... Of course, your hypothesis is surely more fascinating and romantic, but it's not entirely true because if you look at all the songs, the covers, the performances that Beck has done after the Midnite Vultures tour, they hinted that a record of this caliber was on the way, heartbreak aside (if there even was one, given that Beck was already with Giovanni Ribisi's sister, who is now his wife).

Many have seen the end of the love story with the Ryder, but to me, it's more gossip than anything else. The fundamental reason for the decay, the death that hangs in the air in this song, this blinding twilight can be explained primarily musically. In fact, Beck has drawn freely from the work of Hank Williams, following this long path of country and author folk that includes Parsons and reaches all the way to Drake and, not least, Oldham. In reality, I do not agree with the reviewer when they state that "If in the works of Peter Gabriel, despite the nine long years of waiting, it is possible to trace a continuum with previous works – partly betraying the expectations of those who were anticipating a small revolution or at least evolution – the same cannot be said for the CD of the then thirty-two-year-old American Beck Hansen. Sea Change is a record that is, in many ways, shocking, attesting to the author's eclecticism." This is because Beck's forays into folk did not certainly begin with this album.

Grace is a great album but it certainly doesn't stand out for its originality. Nevertheless, good first outing (both for the review and for the album).
