Bubi, I don't know if Ferrara can be considered superior to Bergomi; they are two different personalities. However, Bergomi was in the national team at 18 and was still in the national team at 34 in '98... I don't know if I'm getting my point across. Cannavaro led Italy in the World Cup, Nesta was the captain of Eriksson's stellar Lazio, and he made history in the national team as well (78 caps, 49 Ferrara). F. is strong, but he's not at that level.

I don't think Ferrara is among the top 5. He is outclassed by Facchetti, Scirea, Maldini, Baresi, Bergomi, Nesta, Cannavaro, and maybe others. ;-)

The unification of Italy had a predominantly utilitarian purpose, aimed at avoiding the ongoing rivalries among the small states and aligning everyone with the economically more advanced Piedmont of the Savoy. It was an attempt to bundle everything together. In Italy, there has never been a national identity like there is in France. However, if you ask me, I am first and foremost Italian, but then Roman. :-)
