Symphony X Paradise Lost

Change? Well, if an album sucks, it sucks, and Systematic Chaos is garbage with a few cherries here and there... Paradise Lost, on the other hand, is a fantastic album... Twilight In Olympus might not be exactly brilliant... but apart from the first album, they haven't made any bad ones... and the first with Russell Allen would have been decent anyway...

Holdsworth...you're a phenomenon, keep it up...I care about you...

If I had to reassess it now... it gets a 2... a piece of crap for Top Of The Pops.

Zero The Gay...music that is not demanding in the sense that it's so cliché and predictable that you give it a listen and know all the songs by heart...

Russell Allen is a phenomenon.. Daniel Gildenlow and Jorn Lande are no less... the expression on truemetal was ironic... they often write a lot of nonsense... this review, however, sucks, I wrote it out of frustration...

"Arrogance (allow me this criticism) power/metallara and progressive self-satisfaction"... you, who are a fan of Dream Theater, have the audacity to say this nonsense? Enough with this Drimtiterism... Symphony X at least make their instrumental parts last 2 minutes at most, so even if they get boring, they pass quickly... shall we talk about the Minestrone Delle Anime Perdute: its 4 riffs in 16 minutes, and that instrumental part that's a copy of another 25 Dream Theater songs?

After you gave 3 stars to Systematic Chaos, I understood everything... but come on, 2 stars? It's a much more metal than prog album, in your face, direct, that's its strong point... that's what I like most about Symphony X, it gets me so pumped, even though the artistic value of The Divine Wings of Tragedy and V is much higher... but do you really want to compare the two ballads (Sacrifice and Paradise Lost) with Forsakeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen (that squawking hen James LaBrie, grrrr)? Come on...

Beautiful the Amaran's Plight with the singer from Shadow Gallery... I highly recommend Angular Perceptions by Thought Chamber... very technical but also with great taste... Symphony X are quite standardized, that’s true... they have a more Metal than Prog attitude (which is why some of my acquaintances, true defenders of the steel, manage to appreciate them)... the flaw of Symphony X is many standardized songs, that’s true... but there are pieces like the two suites The Odyssey and The Divine Wings Of Tragedy, Accolade, Through The Looking Glass, The Edge Of Forever, Candlelight Fantasia that are very precious and much more prog than power... the latest album I really appreciate isn’t a true prog album, since the structure of the songs is almost linear (except for the last one, Revelation)... however, it has a dirty riffing, an angry voice, and a drive that made me love it... in fact, on Tuesday, February 26, I will be under the stage at the Fillmore in Cortemaggiore wearing my Paradise Lost shirt... anyway, I understand your point... tying oneself to power can often result in a kitschy experiment... pompous... Symphony X are very pompous in themes, repetitive too... but they have arrangements of exquisite quality... a keyboardist with rare taste (listen to Michael Pinnella's solo album), a singer with balls, whether he has to sing dirty or be melodic, a guitarist who is technically an alien and has his own characteristic style (a less flashy and more serious version of Malmsteen), a drummer who has both touch and power, a very dynamic bassist (probably inferior to Miller who left the band around 2000)... then tastes are tastes, it’s true that DT fans look for me to silence me since I said that Images And Words is a nice album, with confused ideas, some good sparks and nothing more...
