The "torpedone" is a one- or two-story vehicle with large panoramic windows, designed for the collective transport of people; it often features a body with a retractable or transparent roof. The term was created for the first models of open buses. At the beginning of the last century, torpedones were built by mounting open bodies on truck chassis, similar in shape to those of torpedo-type cars, although significantly larger: hence the name "torpedone." In Italy, in the second half of the 1930s, the term "torpedone" was also mandatorily used to replace the word "pullman" during the autarky period when it was decided to abolish foreign-origin terminology, and this usage can still be found in recent texts. Currently, torpedones are in service in all European cities of art, even in the two-story version. Today, they are more commonly completely roofless. Due to its characteristics, designed to allow passengers maximum visibility to the outside, it is often used for transporting tourists.
