Or one could mention "Doin' Their Own Things," the same debut by Maceo Parker, "Funky Mama" by Monk Higgins, Donald Byrd, Reuben Wilson, Grover Washington Jr., Bob James, David Axelrod, Idris Muhammad, Billy Cobham, and all the albums released by Blue Note in the first half of the Seventies... The list goes on and on ;-)

Honestly, I prefer the later ones, "London Calling" and "Sandinista" above all. Great review, in any case.

Well, the substance doesn't seem to change much to me, given that Funk, in some ways, is an evolution of Jazz and the Black musical background that preceded the 1970s. So why talk about it in such a derogatory way? Have you ever listened to the Funkadelic? The Blackbirds? James Brown? Joe Tex? The Hardcore-Funk of the Meters? Funk doesn't just stop at RHCP and Rage Against The Machine ;D

To highlight the relevance of it all, just think that his "Ocappella" was even sampled by Del Naja and the gang aka Massive Attack. Big, big, big :-)

This is the Jazz I prefer, the one tinged with Funk, the trendier, groovier, '70s kind—kudos on the choice! Take a look among the Black records I reviewed to see if you find any that you like ;-) Cheers!

Perhaps the "good MC" is an exaggeration... Neither Thema dei GDV nor Kaos, in short :-))

Mista is a good MC (good flows, nice rhythm, and metrics), but in my opinion, he falls a bit short regarding content... A lot of smoke and very little substance, in short ;-) Let's say he was lucky to meet a fantastic producer like Shocca, who has a flaw of his own: choosing fairly anonymous MCs to whom he entrusts his beats, and Mista is probably one of them. Why don't you try reviewing something that aligns with your musical tastes instead? Just to understand which few artists (Bronski Beat aside) are worthy of entering your Olympus of favorites ;-)
