Great album. A few small changes to the setlist and it would have been even better. Those who insult Nirvana as bands for teenagers are losers. Even Pink Floyd and The Beatles appeal to 16-year-olds... so what? You're pathetic... and I bet that almost all those who act as super connoisseurs of the American alternative scene discovered it thanks to Nirvana, just like I did... and I am grateful to Nirvana for this: who, like them, has been able to condense a variety of underground influences into a few records, making them palatable to a more mainstream rock audience? What you idiots don't understand is that reaching more people isn't always a flaw, on the contrary... the Husker Du you so praise (also because they are not well-known to most) could have sold a ton with massive promotion and a more professional production (not the rough kind that was the case in most instances). If that had happened, they would be a shitty band for teenagers with two chords, while the underrated Nirvana would be legends.

collection of great tracks and some less convincing ones (the minority anyway)... overall impressive even though a few small changes in the lineup (like putting D-7 by the wipers or spank thru instead of polly) would have further improved the result.

a great album. really raw production that fits the overall mood of the music and lyrics. excellent compositions in some cases, good in others, but overall, in my opinion, it doesn't match its successor, partly due to the lesser stylistic variety compared to Bleach.

Mudhoney The Lucky Ones

I would give it a 3 and a half... it didn't excite me, but some tracks (e.g. tales of terror, open mind...) still ooze adrenaline, even though they recall the old Mudhoney repertoire. I preferred their earlier albums (tomorrow hit today, since we’ve become translucent, and under a billion suns) where they tried to mix their garage sound with other influences without seeking radical revolutions. The story of grunge is now very inflated... it would be more accurate to talk about the ā€œSeattle sceneā€ rather than a true genre. Surely there was a common attitude among the various bands (more conceptual than strictly musical), but that's not enough to define a musical genre. And I can't stand those who call Mudhoney anachronistic ā€œbecause grunge is deadā€ and then indulge in the countless fashionable garage-revival bands that are all the rage these days... Mudhoney are a great and incredibly honest rock band that has never released anything less than commendable and still kicks ass live. And that, if done well, is more than enough for me.

great album... it would actually be a 4 and a half. Compositively overall it’s inferior to Nevermind but the less polished production and some more noise-driven tracks that are very well done like "milk it" and "scenteless apprentice" do it great honor. PS even though they were deliberately raw in their execution of the songs and didn’t use frills, Nirvana were not exactly incapable. They may not have been masters of technique, but their style is functional to their expressive mode. While it’s true that their songs are easy to play, it’s equally true that when performed by other, more technical bands, they lose everything. That was their true skill: making technically very simple songs sound like masterpieces, and few can do that. Technicality is one thing; expressiveness and style are another.

for now definitely my favorite by Sebadoh... III and bubble scrape seem interesting, but I still need to explore them a lot, really a bit too lo-fi... in this one, however, there’s the right balance between song and "low fidelity naiveté"

I ordered the box-set today!!! P.S. For those interested, they also sell it on the Zeno Records website (along with many of their other records at rock-bottom prices) for just 17 euros...
