Rabid is old, though. Stereo is from '69 and Rabid is from '77, okay, but they are respectively the third and fourth feature films by Cronenberg (in between, there’s a long production for TV). "Beginnings," then, also in terms of notoriety. Cronenberg was already quite famous before but more among enthusiasts. The Fly ('86) made him known to practically everyone, even my grandmother.

I agree, it's a 5-star film, but it's not the best in the director's filmography: that explains the missing star.

I've never appreciated it much in novels. The situation is quite different in theater: "the hat with bells" is always an emotion for me. There are many overrated works out there. Pirandello is not one of them.
