Pino Daniele Vai Mo' Live @ Piazza del Plebescito - Napoli 08.07.08

I was in Rome to see Pino just a few days after watching him on TV in Naples. A concert (that Neapolitan one) surrounded by a bit of hypocritical propaganda towards Naples, but not harmful after all. The Roman experience was fantastic, not because of the concert itself, but because I was listening to those who played on the records that made me dream with albums released before I was born, which I've been listening to since I was a child. Everyone was there, the real ones in the flesh and blood. And I even got Gigi De Rienzo’s autograph. The lights and the stage designs were very beautiful, but Pino live is not like on the record, as we all know. Only "E sona mò" managed to live up to the studio albums. Anyway, it's not really worth voting for a live performance, as it's the memory of a lovely evening rather than a proper album. However, I do rate the review.

I don't vote for the album because it would be unfair to give a 5 to poorly done revisitations of old tracks, and it would be equally unjust to give a 3 to a song like "'o munn và". It is also the soundtrack of Siani's film "Il secondo amore non si scorda mai". A splendid song. As far as Pino's ballads go, it is the best in the last 9 years. For a piece like this, we need to go back to "Sì forever" from "Come un gelato all'Equatore", and maybe there isn’t even a comparison. The single "Anema e core" is great: a gritty funky-rock anthem for the (destined to be short-lived) return of the megaband. As for the other two new tracks, I have to say that "Acqua 'e rose" is a nice piece, but "L'ironia di sempre" doesn't say anything to me; it also reminds me a lot of a song by D'Alessio (La donna che vorrei): guagliù, the world has turned upside down! Going back to the old songs rewrites, "Donna Cuncetta" is saved for its Neapolitan atmosphere, but it doesn’t have much of the original. The good ideas in the others had already been proposed in less recent reworks. In short, 3 albums that could have fit on one side of a vinyl. Primiballi, don’t be mad at me, okay? I consider you the best among all the inhabitants of DeBaser.

Primiballi, you used the cover of "Terra mia" for the (splendid) review of this single. I have the original 45 RPM. If you give me your email, I'll send it to you and you can upload it on DeBaser.

How can you disagree with all those who consider this artwork the best album by Pino?

I've already commented on this album in a previous review. I'm popping back in to give a shoutout to primiballi. Well done!

Raimondo, what are you doing? Are you stealing my reviews? "Terra mia" was my review! Just kidding, of course. The more, the merrier. I really like the vision of an uncle Pino's return home presented using the titles of the songs.

I must admit that when I first listened to this album, I was pleasantly surprised. Very fresh sounds and good ideas in the melodies. A nice touch of grit that was really needed after "Iguana cafè" and "Passi d'autore." However, I don’t think it's a significantly better album than the previous ones. Perhaps a bit too straightforward. Nevertheless, there are beautiful parts that keep the album lively even in a single uninterrupted listening session.

Gustavo, don't take it personally about the three. It only depends on the fact that some considerations didn't sit well with me. Pointing out the little words of the singer who speaks in "Letter from the heart" and then defining "Mareluna" as neither fish nor meat seems a bit excessive to me. Mareluna has a riff and an atmosphere that make it my favorite track on the album. Anyway, the review is nice overall.

I don't know exactly who, but a well-known Italian poet has informally referred to Pino as a colleague after hearing this album. "On this July evening, the sky is full of stars. And your eyes write a song on my skin." Well, many other examples could be taken from this album to highlight its poetry. But let's remember that Pino is above all a musician. And anyone who is a musician cannot help but love this album. Regardless of personal taste, I believe that a person who knows how to appreciate art would prefer this album above all. Aribravo Gab.

Well done, Gab. Thank goodness. A review from someone who understands something and above all knows Pino. It’s one of my favorite albums. Powerful. Spectacular sounds. The bass and drums ride beautifully. The keyboards and guitars have impressively high-quality sounds. As for the Arabic influences, damn if you’re not right. The album is full of them. In fact, after listening, that’s what sticks out the most to me, even though this is Pino’s rockiest album. The chorus of "Occhi grigi" is indescribable. "I would steal all the time to be close to you, but without speaking...". Too bad I can only write the words without the notes.
