@Bartle Death Note is the essence of what I said: It starts from an original concept but explains everything step by step (and reading the manga makes this even more apparent), hand in hand, meaning you, as a viewer, just sit there like an idiot, unable to infer anything about what’s happening, with no chance to activate your own imaginative trip. It's a drag, basically.

In the end, the frame around manga serves as a pretext for those nerdy confrontations like, "Well, you can't watch the anime without reading the manga"; with stuff like Akira, yes, I glanced at it just the other day at a friend's place and I realized how limited the sole anime viewing is. This, no, just at the beginning the whole series of sci-fi political discussions can be a bit disorienting, but it’s easily understood...
