Well, actually today to move towards the non-derivative you really have to look at electronics ^^ but come on, in the good old rock and roll there’s still something original (maybe not revolutionary like the giants of the past) to be found (alcest, battles, joanna newsom, etc).

I don’t know, like if you listen to Script for a Jester's Tear, you can definitely hear a lot of Genesis in there... anyway, they're definitely better than a lot of other stuff, let’s say that the bad reputation they have is undeserved. Plus, who knows how many people discovered 70s prog thanks to them.

Well, in the end, the simplicity/accessibility to the masses argument is a double-edged sword; after all, even Britney Spears makes "simple" music and has millions of followers. Of course, the quality is quite different, let's say you have to evaluate the simplicity/exposure ratio, etc.

Well, I never felt bad about him, but I don’t think I could handle an entire CD… however, the career was after all honorable, and the character was quite interesting in its contradictions.

Short but intense review! But how derivative are they? Because I wanted to listen to them, but if the answer is "a lot," I guess I’ll postpone it for a while since I still have quite a bit of interesting stuff on my hands.

Nice review, they don't really grab me, I prefer the "originals"... :)

very balanced review, I've never been a big fan of them, like a bit of all melodic death/black... I mean, what's the point of taking extreme music and softening it? just play something else then! :)

I'm not a big expert in "black music," but this album has been a real nice surprise: psychedelia/funk/soul/jazz in a wonderfully successful blend.

I have to say that of the works you proposed I've already tried to listen to a few things and I still wouldn't know if what I've heard is a stroke of genius or a complete mess.. O_o and here I was thinking that John Zorn was the chaotic one!

But what about the one produced in collaboration with Patton under Ipecac (Maxipad Detention)? Is the influence of the good Mike felt?
