For eighteen long years, the only book available in my house was "Giovanni Paolo Secondo, vita e opere," a colossal tome of over a thousand pages, a gift from some eccentric aunt for my parents' wedding. It has a kitschy, eighties cover, but truly kitschy, featuring a photo of Pope Jean Paul on the Pope-mobile waving to an ocean of people spilling into the back cover. And if only I had had any adventure book in my hands, or sci-fi adventure, or sci-fi garbage, even a fantasy soccer one. Even now, my mother, when I return from the village bookstore with a newly purchased book, says to me, "You always buy crap, huh?"
